“You’ll go, and I’ll get swallowed/By someone else’s spit,” goes the roiling refrain of Ian Sweet’s 2018 song “Spit,” a bristling lo-fi rock track in which Jilian Medford was in knots over the future. In contrast “Your Spit,” the lead single of her upcoming album Sucker, tries not to sweat what’s next. Over a blissed-out, blown-out guitar riff, Medford captures the glow of sharing a moment with someone you like like. “Make me believe it/Kiss me like you’re leaving,” she sings. The song doesn’t quite have the juice to soundtrack a truly monumental romance. But after the intense yearning of Medford’s magnificent 2021 full-length, it’s fun to see her revel in just making out. Medford has written often about losing, then longing for, real intimacy. “Your Spit” takes a lighter approach: Why not sing into your hairbrush about it while you can?
