Xbox Exec Hints at Bringing Quick Resume-Like Features to Windows

The Rog Ally, Asus’ new handheld gaming PC, might be getting features like Quick Resume down the road.

In a launch event celebrating the release of the Asus ROG Ally (spotted by The Verge), Roanne Sones, the head of Xbox devices, talked about the device and how to improve the experience. This includes the possibility of implementing features like Quick Resume or something similar to it on Windows.

Microsoft has implemented a Quick Resume feature, but it is exclusively available on its Xbox Series X/S consoles. The feature has yet to make its way onto Windows PCs.

“It’s been pushing us on the platform side of things,” Sones said during the livestream. “You know, how do we think about the idea of you start on your PC, and then you just want to take [the ROG Ally] with you, and you want to pick up where you left off, and you want to be immediately ready to go.”

As The Verge’s Tom Warren points out, Sones has mentioned this before. Last month, during an event that officially revealed the handheld, Sones again discussed the importance of an “experience layer” for handheld gaming PCs.

Microsoft has been working on trying to optimize Windows on handheld gaming PCs, including the Steam Deck. The company also recently experimented with a Windows handheld mode for devices like the Steam Deck, but the prototype was part of a hackathon project.

In our review of the Asus ROG Ally, which we gave an 8, Robert Anderson noted that the device has “the potential to be a serious contender against the Steam Deck,” despite the frustrating UI, abysmal battery life, and lack of touchpads as seen on Valve’s portable gaming PC.
