Woody Allen Weighs In On Marvel Debate

Sony Pictures Classics

If you want to get the internet raging, just ask a famous filmmaker the question of whether Marvel movies qualify as cinema.

Martin Scorsese offered an opinion several years ago that still sets movie Reddit boards ablaze, and since then others have weighed in on the debate including Francis Ford Coppola, David Fincher, David Cronenberg, Paul Verhoeven, James Gunn, Ridley Scott and more.

It was the case again this week in Portugal, where famed controversial filmmaker Woody Allen screened his new romantic thriller “Coup de Chance”. The film marks the auteur’s 50th feature and has drawn some of his best reviews in years on the festival circuit.

Participating in a Q&A at ComunidadeCulturaearte (via WGTC), the 87-year-old was asked about his take on Marvel movies. Turns out he’s never seen them but has an unsurprising take on them anyway:

“I’m only theoretically fed up with Marvel movies because I’ve never seen any. I don’t like those budgets, it’s an industry that has nothing to do with cinema as an art form.”

Allen previously suggested he may retire from filmmaking after “Coup de Chance” due to the difficulty in securing financing for projects these days.

Meanwhile Marvel is gearing up for a busy Fall with the release of the second season of “Loki” next month, and “The Marvels” film in November. They also recently announced that a color version of their special from last year, “Werewolf by Night,” will be coming to Disney+ this Fall.
