This weekend was supposed to be an auspicious one for Marvel Studios with regard to headlines, a much-needed victory lap for an entity that’s spent much of the recent past attempting to reclaim its former glory.
With Spider-Man: Brand New Day set to ignite the box office on the back of strong critical and audience response, it looked like Marvel — and, by extension, Disney — were in for overwhelmingly complimentary coverage, barring, of course, any head-scratching internal decisions.

Welp.
It seems like Disney has decided to rain on its own parade, as Variety’s Joe Otterson has reported that Wonder Man has been canceled at Disney+.
‘Wonder Man’ Canceled at Disney+

This isn’t an inherently confounding headline, as series cancellations are a tale as old as the television industry itself. What makes this particular cancellation a bit strange, however, is that Disney+ renewed Wonder Man for a second season in late March — just over four months ago.
Fronted by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley, Wonder Man debuted on Disney+ in January to critical praise. Fans lauded the show’s willingness to tell a grounded, character-focused story against a bombastic cinematic universe, with Abdul-Mateen II even earning an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

Wonder Man was initially conceived as a miniseries, but the strong reaction prompted Disney+ to order a second season.

That’s what makes this abrupt pivot so confusing. Variety reports that a writers’ room for a second season had never opened, so it seems like development never really commenced.

Otterson writes that characters from the show may appear in other Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. He also keenly notes that Wonder Man‘s renewal itself was a bit of an outlier, as it was only the third live-action Marvel show to have a second season ordered by Disney+.
A Strange Look

Wonder Man follows Simon Williams (Abdul-Mateen II), a struggling actor forced to conceal his superhuman abilities. He forms an unlikely friendship with Trevor Slattery (Kingsley), with their bond having lasting ramifications for both of them.
The show was created by Andrew Guest and Destin Daniel Cretton, the latter of whom directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the imminently successful Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Guest served as showrunner while Cretton directed the first two episodes.

Canceling a well-received series just four months after renewing it is a strange look. Doing so on the day the same studio is releasing a crowd-pleasing blockbuster directed by the show’s co-creator is a stranger look.
Perhaps it’s just a case of the creatives at the helm realizing there wasn’t a story worth telling. Maybe it’s just scheduling conflicts, as Cretton remains attached to a Shang-Chi sequel. One can assume Marvel will want him back for a Brand New Day follow-up, as well.

Regardless, the optics are puzzling.
Upcoming Marvel live-action series for Disney+ include VisionQuest and Daredevil: Born Again season three.
