Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is getting ready to take flight. One of the most highly anticipated films from the revamped DCU that James Gunn and Peter Safran are building has found its writer, and Gunn was out on social media to celebrate.
It seems that the writers’ and actors’ strikes that have delayed many productions in Hollywood have not affected the new franchise that Warner Bros. Discovery is preparing based on the DC Comics characters. While fans wait for news regarding Superman: Legacy, the first movie of the new DCU, another major production from the new canon reveals some important information.
The Hollywood Reporter confirms that actress and writer Ana Nogueira has been chosen to write the script for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which will be part of the first wave of projects included in the first phase of the new DCU, titled Gods & Monsters. This is not the first time that Nogueira has been linked to the Kryptonian hero, since she was originally taped to write a script for Sasha Calle’s Supergirl movie before The Flash spin-off was scrapped. With plans having changed so much in the last year, even with the same writer, it is highly likely we will be getting a new actress playing Kara Zor-El for this project. However, Calle did previously say that she had discussed the possibility of returning to the role again with Safran, so only time will tell.
Although Nogueira is best known for her acting work, which includes appearances on The Vampire Diaries, The Michael J. Fox Show and The Blacklist, she has also built a strong writing career. She wrote the play Which Way to the Stage, and is currently working on an adaptation of Alice Sola’s Kim short story titled Mothers, Lock Up Your Daughters.
Following the announcement, James Gunn took to his Instagram account to hype up Nogueira’s script. He wrote:
“A hearty public welcome to Ana Nogueira to the DC Studios family. Ana is an amazing writer whose screenplay adaptation of Woman of Tomorrow is above and beyond anything I hoped it would be. We’re excited to be moving forward on this unique take on Supergirl in this beautiful, star-spanning tale.”
What’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow About?
Created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino in 1959, Supergirl made her debut on the pages in Action Comics #252 as a female answer to the Superman phenomenon. Kara is Kal-El’s cousin, sent to Earth to help her cousin and protect him. However, as time went by, she became her own heroine and began to live her own adventures until she became one of the most emblematic women in the world of superheroes.
In Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, written by Tom King and drawn by Bilquis Evely, Kara finds herself in a crisis. Her life has lost meaning, and she can’t find a reason to face each day, even though she has lived truly memorable adventures in the past. But she feels like everyone sees her through Superman’s eyes.
Trying to give new meaning to her life, Kara embarks on a journey that will change everything forever. Her new adventure will take her to meet a young alien whose world has been destroyed and seeks revenge on those who have left her with nothing. And if Supergirl doesn’t help her, she’ll do it alone. Together they will embark on a journey that will leave deeper marks on them than they imagined.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to hit theaters in 2026. Now that the screenwriter has been announced, there will surely be news about the director soon. Meanwhile, the cast announcement may take a little longer.
