With the death of Tony Stark at the end of Avengers: Endgame, Samuel L. Jackson became Marvel’s longest-tenured star.
Jackson’s master spy Nick Fury initially debuted in 2008’s Iron Man, before he would eventually be the driving force that brought the Avengers together.
In total, Jackson has appeared in 11 films, and now, has finally been given to opportunity to take center stage in the new Disney+ series Secret Invasion.
The Key To Jackson’s Success
According to Jackson, the secret to his successful 15-plus year relationship with Marvel has been to have fun and be the grounding force in the MCU.
“Enjoying the moment that I have,” Jackson says. “Knowing what my job is when I come into a particular story. Knowing that I’m most times the human grounding element for everything that’s, you know, extra special or super. And being able to come in and handle the gravity of it and the seriousness of it. And still have the sense of humor that people see me in.”
Now, for the first time, Nick Fury is taking the lead. When he learns of a contingent of Skrulls, shape-shifting aliens he first formed an alliance with in 2019’s Captain Marvel, are attempting to secretly invade Earth, Fury returns from space to defend the planet.
A Nick Fury Story
“It’s a human story, not a superhero story,” says director Ali Selim, who cites The Third Man, Unforgiven, and The Searchers as tonal inspirations. “It’s the Nick Fury story.”
According to Jackson, for Secret Invasion, the actor attempted to learn everything about Nick Fury. He approached writer/producer Brian Tucker early in the show’s development with questions like, “Where Nick lives, who’s there? Is he alone? How vulnerable is he? What’s he been doing for the last three years he’s been missing [in space]?”
End of the Line For Jackson?
With Secret Invasion touted as Fury’s “one last fight” speculation has run rampant that this could be the master spy’s final hurrah.
Jackson, for his part, however, is keeping things close to the vest.
“I don’t know,” says Jackson. “I always try to figure [that] out when a Marvel film is over. Am I gonna be in the next one? I’m constantly asking that question. Can I go to Wakanda?”
