Why Superman Series With A Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score Hasn’t Received A Season 4 Renewal Yet

Amid a lot of uncertainty at Warner Bros. over Paramount’s acquisition and legal battles, My Adventures with Superman has yet to be renewed for another season—and one of the showrunners has given some insight into what’s going on.

The critically acclaimed animated series debuted in 2023, with Jack Quaid voicing the titular character, as Clark Kent/Superman works with Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen to report on the major events occurring in Metropolis and defeat numerous villains. Alice Lee, Ishmel Sahid and Kiana Madeira provide the voices for Lois, Jimmy and Kara Zor-El, respectively.

A social media user asked co-creator and co-showrunner Jake Wyatt on X why Adult Swim hasn’t renewed My Adventures with Superman yet, especially since the season 3 finale is coming up on August 16.

Wyatt responded by saying that while ratings are the best they’ve ever been, and the stakeholders (DC Studios, Adult Swim and HBO Max) have been kind to the show, “each has to chart its own future in an uncertain, unstable climate. That takes time.”

He went on to acknowledge the hard work put in by DC Studios co-chairs Peter Safran and James Gunn to save My Adventures with Superman from cancellation, getting the show renewed for a third season and greenlighting the spinoff My Adventures with Green Lantern, which is currently in development.

Despite that critical advocacy, Wyatt noted, “It’s a weird time in entertainment,” so if My Adventures with Superman doesn’t get renewed, “it won’t be because they didn’t support it.”

My Adventures with Superman season 3 was a “gift from everyone involved,” according to Wyatt, with the TV creator admitting that he learned more with this season than on any other project he’s worked on in the past. “I’d love to bring those lessons back to Superman—but I’m grateful just to have taken the ride,” he added.

“My Adventures With Superman has not yet been renewed for a fourth season. Views have been great! Our best ever. Our stakeholders—DC Studios, Adult Swim, HBOmax—have been great to the show. But each has to chart its own future in an uncertain, unstable climate. That takes time.

“However it turns out, getting to make our third season was a gift from everyone involved, especially our team and our viewers. I learned more on S3 than on any other project, and I’d love to bring those lessons back to Superman—but I’m grateful just to have taken the ride.

“One last thing: Peter Safran and James Gunn saved our show from the chopping block, renewed us for a third season, and gave us a spinoff. It’s a weird time in entertainment, but if My Adventures With Superman doesn’t get a fourth season, it won’t be because they didn’t support it.”

Wyatt didn’t get into specifics about the “unstable climate” and why it’s a “weird time” in the entertainment industry, but one of the biggest factors affecting Warner Bros. right now is Paramount’s attempt at acquiring the company.

Paramount is currently facing lawsuits by multiple attorneys general across the United States, which is delaying the deal from being finalized. A trial is scheduled for March.

Some entities are hoping for a settlement soon so that the issue doesn’t become even more chaotic for the industry, with David Ellison even threatening to move Paramount out of California.

This is having a major impact on DC Studios and other sectors of Warner Bros. While some movies and shows are still moving forward at the company, there’s hesitancy to greenlight other projects amid the uncertainty.

As Wyatt noted, the lack of a renewal is not due to low ratings or because executives don’t have faith in the quality of the show.

It’s not just viewership that’s soaring. Reviews for My Adventures with Superman have been exceptional, and every single season has earned a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. The show even scored a Saturn Award nomination in 2024 for Best Animated Television Series or Special.

The My Adventures with Superman season 3 finale airs Sunday, August 16 at 12 a.m. EDT on Adult Swim.
