White Lotus to Switch From Limited Series to Drama or Comedy Category at Emmys

The Television Academy has reversed course about HBO’s “The White Lotus” competing as a limited series at this year’s Emmy Awards and will instead compete in the Drama Series categories.

Back in March 2022, the TV Academy reported that the series would be up against competitors in the limited series category when the awards show returned on Sept 18, 2023. The Academy has since walked back that decision, having determined that the series’ second season will be moved to categories for dramas. The Season 2 finale dropped on HBO Max in December 2022.

“The Television Academy has determined The White Lotus, Season 2, is eligible in the Outstanding Comedy or Drama Series category,” a Television Academy spokesperson told TheWrap Friday.

According to the Television Academy, a limited series is “defined as a program with two (2) or more episodes with a total running time of at least 150 program minutes that tells a complete, non-recurring story. The story arc must be completely resolved within its season, with no on-going storyline and/or main characters in subsequent seasons.”

Season 2 of the series stars F. Murray Abraham, Jennifer Coolidge, Adam DiMarco, Beatrice Grannò, Meghann Fahy, Jon Gries, Tom Hollander, Sabrina Impacciatore, Michael Imperioli, Theo James, Aubrey Plaza, Haley Lu Richardson, Will Sharpe, Simona Tabasco and Leo Woodall.

The HBO show created by Mike White tells the story of employees and guests, who are staying in a fictional White Lotus resort chain. The characters’ time eventually becomes impacted by their various dysfunctions. As viewers will recall, the second season inspired by its Italian landscape, strikes an operatic tone rooted in themes of adultery and sexual politics.
