What Are 5 Basic Ways You Can Improve Your Screenwriting?

The things you’re about to read might seem like basic skills, but I cannot tell you how few people I see trying to break in that are even attempting some of them. If you already do all five, then you are well on your way to being a professional writer.

The way to get better is just to keep writing and keep learning.

  1. Read screenplays: Read as many screenplays as you can get your hands on, especially those of successful movies in your genre. This will give you a sense of the structure, pacing, and formatting of screenplays, as well as an understanding of what works and what doesn’t. The more you read, the better you will write. It’s that simple.

  2. Watch movies: Watch as many movies as possible, paying attention to the storytelling techniques used, the dialogue, and the pacing. Take note of the things that you liked and the things that you didn’t like. This is my favorite way to procrastinate but also it is useful. Watch in the genre you write and see how the best filmmakers tackle ideas.

  3. Write regularly: The more you write, the better you will become. Set a goal to write every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. You can start by writing short scripts or scenes and work your way up to longer scripts. Just write to be a writer!

  4. Get feedback: Show your work to other writers, friends, or family members who will give you honest feedback. Take their comments into consideration and use them to improve your writing. Listen to feedback and hone your skills. Always try to get better.

  5. Rewrite: Writing is rewriting. After you finish your first draft, put it away for a few days, then come back to it with fresh eyes. Make notes of the things that need to be improved and rewrite your script until it’s the best it can be. It drives me nuts when I hear people who do not rewrite or polish work. Break it and re-break it. That’s the only way forward.
