EXCLUSIVE: Here’s your first exclusive clip of Javier Bardem and Victoria Luengo in Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s title The Beloved, which is playing In Competition in Cannes this week.
The Spanish-language family drama sees Bardem play acclaimed film director Esteban Martínez, who is a legend both for his films and for his past marked by violence and excess. For his new project he offers his daughter Emilia (Luengo) a role under the pretext of helping her with her stalled acting career. Living together on set will foster a closeness they haven’t shared for years, but it will also reopen old wounds that never healed.
Goodfellas is shopping launching the project to buyers out in Cannes this week.
Multiple Goya Award-winning writer-director Sorogoyen pens the script with Isabel Pena and Sorogoyen’s Madrid production label Caballo Films is producing with Movistar Plus+ and Le Pacte co-producing. Le Pacte is distributing the title in France.
Bardem is fresh off a Golden Globe nomination for his role as Jose Menendez, the father of the Menendez brothers, in the Netflix series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. His most recent roles include Dune: Part Two and The Little Mermaid live-action remake. Black comedy The Good Boss was the last time Bardem starred in Spanish-language film. That 2021 film was Spain’s Oscars entry for Best International Feature.
Sorogoyen’s credits include The New Years, a series that world premiered at the Venice Film Festival and box office hit The Beasts, which won the Best Foreign film at France’s César Awards.
