A24 has unveiled the first trailer for the supernatural horror-thriller Talk to Me, marking the feature directorial debut of Australian twin brothers Danny and Michael Philippou, which they acquired out of Sundance 2023 in a highly competitive situation and will release in theaters nationwide on July 28th.
The film bowing in Sundance’s Midnight section, which Danny Philippou and Bill Hinzman wrote, will contend in its opening weekend at the box office with the new Haunted Mansion film from Disney. It watches as a group of friends discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand, becoming hooked on the new thrill.
Mia (Sophie Wilde) is determined to get a piece of the otherworldly action in order to be distracted on the eve of her mother’s death. But when her group of friends gathers for another unruly séance with the mysterious embalmed hand that promises a direct line to the spirits, they’re unprepared for the consequences of bending the rules through prolonged contact. As the boundary between worlds collapses and disturbing supernatural visions increasingly haunt Mia, she rushes to undo the horrific damage before it’s irreversible.
In his review of Talk to Me out of Sundance, Deadline’s Damon Wise called the film “unnerving and highly effective.” Causeway Films’ Samantha Jennings and Kristina Ceyton (The Babadook) produced the pic, with Miranda Otto, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Dhanji, Zoe Terakes and Chris Alosio rounding out its cast.
A24 on April 7th released Kelly Reichardt’s film Showing Up, starring Michelle Williams and Hong Chau. The studio will next release the horror comedy Beau Is Afraid, from Hereditary and Midsommar filmmaker Ari Aster, with that pic hitting theaters in L.A. and New York this Friday, April 14th before expanding nationwide on the 21st. Other upcoming titles currently on the studio’s release schedule include Nicole Holofcener’s dramedy You Hurt My Feelings (May 26) with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Celine Song’s acclaimed romantic drama, Past Lives (June 2).
