Tomb Raider studio Crystal Dynamics has confirmed a round of layoffs

Crystal Dynamics has become the latest studio owned by Embracer Group to be hit with layoffs.

In a message posted on Wednesday, the Tomb Raider and Perfect Dark developer said it had laid off 10 employees as part of internal restructuring efforts.

“Crystal Dynamics made the difficult decision to part ways with 9 Brand/Marketing and 1 IT employee today due to an internal restructuring to align the studio with our current business needs,” it confirmed. ”We are working directly with the affected staff to fully support them.

“If you have applicable positions open at your studio across Brand Direction, Creative Services, Community, or IT, please pass them along to [email protected] and we will ensure the information ends up in the right hands.”

Embracer, which acquired Crystal Dynamics from Square Enix last year, said in June that it was implementing a “restructuring program” which would see some game studios closed and some projects cancelled.

The announcement followed what the company said was the unexpected collapse of a $2 billion deal with a mystery partner, which was later reported to be the Saudi government-funded Savvy Games Group.

At the time, Crystal Dynamics said its current projects wouldn’t be impacted by the events at Embracer.

“We want to reassure fans that there will be no impact to our continuing efforts with our partners at The Initiative on Perfect Dark, or our next Tomb Raider title being developed in collaboration with Amazon Games,” it said.

Earlier this week, Embracer laid off 26 employees at Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition and Mythforce developer Beamdog, which it acquired last year, according to Game Developer.

Embracer shut down Saints Row developer Volition last month, and is also reportedly considering selling Borderlands studio Gearbox, which It acquired in 2021 for a deal worth up to $1.4 billion.
