For a generation of fans, Tom Holland IS Spider-Man. After initially making his debut in 2015’s “Captain America: Civil War”, Holland would reprise his role in two “Avengers” films and a trilogy of his own.
At the conclusion of “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, which saw former Spider-Men Tobey MaGuire and Andrew Garfield reprise their roles, Peter Parker is left alone in the world. The spell of Dr. Strange has made everyone who knew him forget who he was, including MJ.
Returning As Spider-Man
Although Holland has seen amiable to returning for another Spider-Man film, no official announcement has been made. In a recent interview however, Holland revealed that the has had meetings with Marvel about the future of the character.
“It was myself, Amy, [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige, [executive producer] Rachel [O’Connor], sometimes other executives from Marvel will sit in,” he says. “It’s a collaborative process. The first few meetings were about, ‘Why would we do this again?’ And I think we found the reason why. I’m really, really happy with where we’re at in terms of the creative.”
“But I’m also a little apprehensive about it,” he adds. “There’s a bit of a stigma about the fourth one in all franchises. I feel like we hit a home run with our first franchise and there’s a part of me that wants to walk away with my head held high and pass the baton to the next lucky kid that gets to bring this character to life.”
A Continuing Journey
Interestingly, one of Holland’s biggest supporters and closest confidants as he has gone through his journey as Spider-Man has been fellow MCU star Benedict Cumberatch. The duo both live in London, and starred together in “No Way Home”.
“The boy’s got range,” says Cumberbatch “He knows what works, what stretches him and keeps his catalog varied and shows his ability to transform and surprise us all. So he’s not negatively affected by the branding of playing the superhero of all superheroes, which Spider-Man is, really. He’s asked me for advice every now and again, but he’s making brilliant calls and I’ve also asked for his on occasion.”
While other Marvel stars such as Scarlett Johansson and Elizabeth Olsen have seemed ready to move on from Marvel, Tom Holland seems content to keep Spider-Man moving forward.
I think I can speak for most Marvel fans when I say, we will be glad to have him back.
