Tom Holland teased MCU fans with exciting news, days before Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s much-anticipated premiere. We have now seen Holland play the web-slinger six times in the MCU, and he is about to reprise the role in his fourth standalone film. The actor caught flak last month for saying “he’s done something wrong” if he was still Spider-Man after 30, and he also endorsed another actor to take on the mantle. That spurred theories that the character would be recast, and that Brand New Day could be Holland’s final Spider-Man movie.
Well, Holland then clarified his previous remark in June, asserting that he’s in it for the long haul. He did see himself aging out of the role, however, saying that he would likely be pushing it after 37 (he’s currently 30). “I think the point of it is that I would love to pass the baton on, and I haven’t achieved that yet,” he told Variety. So, does he intend to walk away once he’s fulfilled his character’s potential? Based on his latest comment, not likely.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter this week, Holland confirmed that he was down for more Spider-Man movies: “I will do it for as long as they’ll have me. So if [Brand New Day] does good, I guess we’ll see!” That’s quite a commitment, especially if you consider that Tobey Maguire last played Spider-Man at 46. Brand New Day serves as a reset for Holland’s character, who’s teased to be going through a major transformation, physically and emotionally, which could be a setup for a new trilogy.
Brand New Day is set four years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Doctor Strange cast a spell that would make the entire world forget Peter Parker ever existed, to prevent a world-ending, multiversal catastrophe. Peter saves everyone in the aftermath, but at great personal cost — he is now estranged from everyone he once loved. With great power comes great responsibility indeed.
Brand New Day picks up that thread, with Peter no longer close with MJ and his best friend Ned. He then develops new, weird superpowers, just as new enemies arrive to ruin his day. Holland previously said the sequel would be darker and more mature, dealing with themes of isolation that would be more relatable to younger people. He added the final frame of the film explains its title, hinting that the ending leads to a turning point rather than a fresh beginning.
It looks like Holland is locked in to play Spider-Man for “as long as they’ll have him,” and the prospects for a sequel are looking bright, considering the box office forecasts for Brand New Day. The sequel could gross up to $250 million in the US this opening weekend, based on the latest projections. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige recently confirmed plans for a live-action Miles Morales movie, “sometime after the Spider-Verse series ends.” We can only hope Holland is up for a crossover when that finally happens.
