Titans season 4 episode 9 was out of this world, literally! In the past Titans has been one of the only DC shows to stay clear of crossovers and the addition of the Multiverse into the storyline. Sees as in the past Titans has been a much more grounded series, however this season in particular veers towards a more magical and fantasy aspect. The episode titled “Dude, Where’s My Gar?” revolves around Ryan Potter’s character Gar. In what was one of his only solo episodes where we got to learn more about his past.
In this episode we see Gar taken from the Red by Dominic Mndawe aka Freedom Beast (Nyambi Nyambi) to help him uncover the truth about his origin. That Niles Caulder, the very person who helped him when he was younger was behind his parents death. Gar wants to leave to find his family, the Titans but Dominic tries to convince him to stay and protect the Red which he calls “A force that connects and pervades all animal life, in this universe and many others.” This line opens the door to a sleu of cameos from beloved faces in the DC Universe.
When Gar Enters the Red again, this time looking for his family, he sees a few familiar faces. Most of the cameos were done using previous footage. We first get to see The Flash (Grant Gustin), who then shocks Gar into Blue Valley, where we see Brec Bassinger make a cameo in what was her final appearance as Stargirl since this is airing after her own series ended. After that Gar ends up back in the red where he sees Swamp Thing, it’s been a while hasn’t it, and we definitely weren’t expecting this but, we end up seeing Shazam (Zachary Levy) as well, and we even see a cameo by acclaimed comic book writer Grant Morrison who is titled “The master of the Multiverse”. Toward the end of the scene, Gar encounters B’Wana Beast, whose powers are also drawn from The Red (like Animal Man, Vixen, and Beast Boy).
The episode ends with Gar landing in the Doom Patrol universe, there we finally see him come face to face with Cyborg (Joivan Wade). This meeting would’ve been a lot more exciting if Gar wasnt unconscious. Cyborg who is one of the original Titans characters is best friends with Gar in most realities. So seeing these two together is a real treat for Og Teen Titans fans. What comes next, now that is bound to be exciting.
That’s not all though, there was even a subtle nod to the original Teen Titans Cartoons Included. There are a number of voice cameos that appear toward the end, including characters from Harley Quinn and Man of Steel. Considering this is their final season the Titans writers have really gone all out this season.
