Bad news DC fans, it looks like the only good live action DC TV shows left, that were meant to relaunch the DC Universe are coming to an end
Based on the DC Comics superhero team the Teen Titans, the series depicts a group of young heroes who join forces in their fight against evil. The show follows the young superheroes of the eponymous team as they combat evil and other perils. Disbanded when the story begins, the series sees the team return when the original and new members reform the Titans. The Titans fight crime throughout various locations, including Detroit, San Francisco, Gotham City, and Metropolis.
Featured as members of the team are Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites), Kory Anders (Anna Diop), Gar Logan (Ryan Potter), Rachel Roth (Teagan Croft) and Conner Kent (Joshua Orpin). The show also features Jason Todd (Curran Walters), Donna Troy (Conor Leslie), Hank Hall (Alan Ritchson), Dawn Granger (Minka Kelly), Rose Wilson (Chelsea Zhang) and Tim Drake (Jay Lycurgo). The show premiered in 2018.
“Doom Patrol” which premiered in 2019 follows a team of traumatized and downtrodden superheroes, each of whom has suffered a horrible accident that gave them superhuman abilities but also left them scarred and disfigured. The members of the team have found their purpose through The Chief and have come together to investigate some of the world’s weirdest phenomena. Part support group, part superhero team, The Doom Patrol is a band of superpowered freaks fighting for a world that wants nothing to do with them. the series features Jane (Diane Guerrero), Rita Farr (April Bowlby), Vic Stone (Joivan Wade), Larry Trainor (Matt Bomer / Matthew Zuk), Cliff Steele (Brendan Fraser / Riley Shanahan), and Chief (Timothy Dalton).
Both shows are currently on their 4th season which will be their last. The shows are produced by Jeremy Carver and executive producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, Chris Dingess, and Tamara Becher-Wilkinson.
“While these will be the final seasons of “Titans” and “Doom Patrol”, we are very proud of these series and excited for fans to see their climactic endings,” an HBO Max spokesperson said in a statement to THR. “We are grateful to Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television for making such thrilling, action-packed, heartfelt series. We thank “Titans” showrunner Greg Walker, executive producers Greg Berlanti, Akiva Goldsman, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, Richard Hatem, and the team at Weed Road Pictures. For “Doom Patrol”, we celebrate showrunner Jeremy Carver and executive producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, Chris Dingess and Tamara Becher-Wilkinson. For four seasons, fans have fallen in love with the “Titans” and “Doom Patrol”, investing in their trials and tribulations, and in their legendary battles saving the world time and time again.”
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that amid all the changes with DC Entertainment the producers of both “Titans” and “Doom Patrol” wrote proper endings for their current seasons so as to not leave fans in a lurch just in case. With James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over DC, the duo is planning a new roster of films and TV series which will eventually result in the decision to end both shows, as HBO Max will soon be integrated with Discovery+, and the platform has been dumping content.
“To our wonderfully supportive partners at HBO Max, Warner Bros. Television, Berlanti Productions, and DC Studios, thank you for indulging us these past four seasons,” Carver said. “Also, what were you smoking? To our brilliant cast, indomitable crew, fearless writing staff and, most of all, to our beautiful fans: thank you all the more. You made this a once-in-a-lifetime ride.
With “Doom Patrol”, “Titans” and “The Flash” ending, Berlanti’s CW shows will soon only include “Superman & Lois” and “Gotham Knights” (due in March). Berlanti is also reworking “Green Lantern” for HBO Max, he also has the drama “The Girls on the Bus” starring Melissa Benoist and Mark Consuelos in the works.
“I’m immensely proud of our gifted cast, crew and writing staff and their efforts in bringing to life all 49 episodes over the last five-plus years,” Titans exec producer Greg Walker said. “I couldn’t have asked for better partners in Berlanti Productions, Warner Bros. Television, and HBO Max, and from the beginning, Geoff Johns and Akiva Goldsman. I’m incredibly grateful for their unyielding trust throughout this process. Lastly, I have to thank our incredible fans for their continued support, engagement, and the passionate community they’ve built around our show. We have six episodes left to unleash upon the world that we hope will give our beloved characters the creative closure we all know they deserve.”
“Titans” and “Doom Patrol” immediately became favorites amongst DC fans, because of its comic accuracy and how enjoyable both shows were. They both balanced each other out. While “Titans” was more serious and intense, “Doom Patrol” was a little wackier. “Titans” is grim and dark but “Doom Patrol” is fun and comedic, still both shows developed a fan base that have followed the crazy and intense adventures of these two super teams for the past 4 seasons, and have fallen in love with these characters.
Stay tuned for the final 6 episodes of “Titans” and “Doom Patrol”.
