A new X-Files comic book series has been confirmed. The X-Files is the epitome of classic 90s television. Created by Chris Carter in 1993, the supernatural sci-fi thriller followed FBI Special Agents Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) as they traveled across the country investigating extraterrestrial goings-on. Even someone who’s never seen The X-Files will have heard its theme song or seen The Simpsons’ iconic crossover episode, so it’s understandable why people aren’t done with the universe just yet.
The TV show’s original ending was in 2002 after 11 seasons. However, a few years later, Scully and Mulder returned for two late-2010s revival series in 2016 and 2018. And there were movies too: The X-Files (1998) and The X-Files: I Want to Believe (2008), both of which received a mixed reception. However, an X-Files renaissance is soon upon us. Not only Ryan Coogler’s reboot series and an R-rated director’s cut, Vrach Frankenshteyn, are on the horizon, but also a new comic book series — and they are bringing in the big guns.
While Topps Comics were the first to produce books based on The X-Files, Dynamite Entertainment is taking over with a new series releasing this winter. Not only that, but they also confirmed that veteran X-Files writer Joe Hill would be making a grand return. The X-Files’ comic book return is part ofa larger deal between Dynamite and Disney, who own the copyright. While Dynamite has kept the plot under wraps, they have shared the first issue’s cover and character designs for Scully and Mulder by artist Riley Brown.
Nick Barrucci, CEO and owner of Dynamite Entertainment, told Bleeding Cool that the comic couldn’t have come at a better time following the announcement of Vrach Frankenshteyn:
“Dynamite is launching The X-Files, and the timing could not be better for the announcement, as Chris Carter’s X-Files: I Want To Believe is being released – The Chris Carter Cut is being re-released on Disney Plus and Hulu this Friday, the 14th. And to make this really special, we’ve brought back Joe Harris, who wrote some incredible stories, and it’s great that he was able to tackle the series and bring it to retailers and fans!”

Dynamite’s decision to bring back Hill couldn’t be better, given his experience and deep love for the show. He also expressed his excitement about creating engaging new stories for Scully, Mulder, and the X-Files universe:
“The X-Files has always been sacred to me. From my own early TV fandom on Friday and Sunday nights to getting to work on one of the greatest supernatural thriller/science fiction franchises in history, the further adventures of Agents Mulder and Scully have occupied a very special place in my head and career. I am beyond honoured to write them, and I am absolutely over the moon to work with Dynamite on this new series.”
The X-Files clearly inspires a lot of passion, which is why those who’ve previously worked on it are so eager to come back. Of course, for Carter, this show is his creation, so it makes sense that he is working closely alongside Coogler as an executive producer. As for what the director’s version of The X-Files looks like, that won’t be evident until its release, especially if only one half of the iconic duo is seemingly scheduled to appear. But with Carter’s involvement, the possibilities for what else could be added to the show’s world are endless.
