‘The Take’: Shia LaBeouf’s Comeback, Taylor Swift’s New Album

Shia LaBeouf is making headlines, Taylor Swift surprises fans with the announcement of a new album and Britney Spears releases a raw message about her conservatorship.

On the heels of Olivia Wilde’s Variety cover in which the “Don’t Worry Darling” director discussed LaBeouf’s departure from her film, LaBeouf sent emails and texts to Variety, insisting he quit Wilde’s film and wasn’t fired. Following that, news broke that LaBeouf was cast in Francis Ford Coppola’s $100 million epic “Megalopolis,” just as he hits the Venice Film Festival for another movie, “Padre Pio.” After the actor was essentially blacklisted from Hollywood after his ex-girlfriend FKA Twigs filed a sexual battery suit in 2020, is he attempting a comeback?

The VMAs got an exciting announcement for Swifties: the artist is dropping a new album, titled “Midnight,” in October. Swift made the reveal as only she can do, after taking the stage to collect the biggest award of the night.

Spears didn’t attend the VMAs, but the pop star managed to make headlines during the award show, posting a 22-minute audio message to YouTube in which she detailed the horrors she says she experienced during her conservatorship. It’s been a big week for Spears, whose new song with Elton John, “Hold Me Closer,” is topping music charts.

This week’s episode of “The Take” welcomes a special guest host, Variety senior entertainment editor Angelique Jackson, who joins co-host Elizabeth Wagmeister, Variety‘s chief correspondent, to discuss the big stories of the week.

Regularly hosted by Wagmeister and senior awards editor Clayton Davis, Variety‘s “The Take,” presented by Apple TV+, is a weekly series that navigates the week’s top stories from entertainment, pop culture and media, while providing expert analysis and exclusive insight on what’s buzzing in Hollywood. Filmed in Variety‘s state-of-the-art studio in Los Angeles, new episodes are released on Fridays on Variety.com, YouTube and social media.
