The Star Wars Opening Crawl Will Return for Future Movies

More good news has been revealed straight out of this weekend’s Star Wars Celebration, as it’s been officially confirmed that the opening crawl is coming back to Star Wars movies. In the years to come, there are several planned Star Wars films with three new movies that have been just announced. It’s not clear exactly when the first of these three movies will arrive, but when it hits the big screen, it will come with a classic Star Wars crawl. Better yet for fans of the crawl, it sounds like the plan is for all of the upcoming films to have it moving forward.

“The crawl’s coming back,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy bluntly told Entertainment Weekly, adding that “the crawl is for movies” and isn’t planned to be featured in the Disney+ shows.

Introduced in the original Star Wars movie by George Lucas, the classic crawl consists of yellow-colored text crawling its way up the screen to provide some of the backstory for viewers, getting them more acquainted with this cinematic universe. It was featured in the other two installments of the original trilogy, and would later be used for both the prequel and sequel trilogies as well. The standalone films Star Wars: Rogue One and Solo: A Star Wars Story did not feature the crawl, and it had been up in the air as to if the crawl would be finished with following The Rise of Skywalker.

One of the biggest reveals to come out of Star Wars Celebration weekend was word that Daisy Ridley would be returning as Rey to lead another Star Wars movie. Kennedy spoke to EW a bit more about that project, teasing how excited everyone is to continue the story.

“As we move into the future space — this story is about 15 years outside of The Rise of Skywalker — obviously we realized post-war, post–First Order rise of the New Jedi Order, we left episode 9 with Ray making a commitment to Luke Skywalker that she would rebuild the Jedi order,” Kennedy said. “And so here we are — we’re ready to do that. And it took a lot of discussion because obviously we’ve been developing stories in different spaces, and television has been a big focus of our attention right now. But there’s still so much interest in what happens after The Rise of Skywalker. So we’re excited to be doing that.”

It was also announced that Logan and Indiana Jones: The Dial of Destiny helmer James Mangold will direct a separate Star Wars movie, while Dave Filoni is also planning to direct a third film that will help tie together the Disney+ shows The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew. It was also teased that the previously-announced movies from Rian Johnson and Taika Waititi are still wanted at Lucasfilm, though given the busy schedules of those filmmakers, they may not be happening anytime soon. In any case, none of these movies yet have a release date.
