The Slap, One Year Later: A Complete Timeline of the Oscars Drama

April 2022: SNL addresses the incident when Jerrod Carmichael hosts. In his opening monologue he referred to how the moment completely took over the cultural conversation, and then in a sketch he played a seat filler whose moment with his idol was ruined by the outburst. On Weekend Update, Michael Che also noted that since the Smiths have decided to reveal so much about their personal lives, it’s understandable that Rock would have missed Jada’s condition.

Will Smith resigns from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which means that he no longer votes on Oscars. However, he gets to keep his and can still be nominated—and next decade, he can attend future ceremonies. After an investigation, the board of directors banned him from the ceremony for 10 years.

Jada Pinkett Smith’s Red Table Talk acknowledges the incident and says the family was focusing on healing and would address the issue at a later date.

June 2022: A couple months later, Jada hosts an episode about alopecia and said to viewers in a solo statement, “Now about Oscar night, my deepest hope is that these two intelligent, capable men have the opportunity to heal, talk this out, and reconcile….The state of the world today? We need ’em both.”

July 2022: Smith issues another apology, this one on video, and answered questions from fans about the incident. The five-minute video, titled “It’s been a minute…,” opened with a message for fans: “Over the last few months, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and personal work….”

The video, posted to YouTube, includes another apology to Rock, as well as to Rock’s mother, who had given an interview after the Slap went down. Smith also emphasized that Jada was in no way involved in the incident.
