Over the years, Starz has made a name for itself as the home base for female-forward, soapy medieval history dramas. The Serpent Queen is their latest and most devilishly fun costume drama to date. The Serpent Queen takes us away from the York and Tudor courts and drops us on the continent. Young Catherine de’ Medici (Liv Hill) is an orphan left to rot in a convent until her scheming uncle, Pope Clement (Charles Dance), sells her to the French court for power and influence. Catherine is then forced to survive in a foreign court that views her with suspicion all while she falls helplessly in unrequited love with her Prince Charming. Samantha Morton plays Catherine as an older, wiser, more brutally cunning Queen regent, explaining her story even as she lives it out. The Serpent Queen is a juicy must-watch for historical drama nerds.
