The Purge saga seemed to have everything ready for its next installment after the epic outcome of The Forever Purge. However, the plans are not going as expected and the new movie might be in doubt.
James DeMarco, creator of the horror story produced by Blumhouse and Universal Pictures confessed to The Playlist that he is having trouble moving forward with the sixth film of The Purge:
“I wrote the script. Universal has seen it. There are concerns about budget, but it definitely presents a fractured America. The America I present in Purge 6 is where we are all separated by ideology and sexual preference. So, the states are broken down in different ways. It’s written, it’s in [Universal’s] hands. I think they’re scared about the budget. But my thing was if I was going to come back and direct a sixth one, it was going to be something bigger and a little more epic in scope, with this new America I want to present and bringing back [Frank Grillo’s] character. So, it’s kinda in limbo.”
The first The Purge film was released in 2013, featuring a family man who is dedicated to developing security systems that are used during the night where The Purge is celebrated. It is an event that occurs once a year, and in which, for 12 hours at night, all crimes are allowed and have no consequences. Including murder.
In the next installment, Leo Barnes was introduced, Frank Grillo’s character, a police sergeant who seeks revenge for the death of his son, but ends up involved in something much bigger when he crosses paths with other people during the night of The Purge.
In the third installment, Barnes is in charge of safeguarding a presidential candidate during the night of The Purge. However, they are betrayed and must escape, facing the dangers of the street on the most terrifying night of the year. So, without a doubt, the return of Leo would be a good way to continue the legacy of the films and bring the entire universe of The Purge back together.
How The Forever Purge Set Up a New Beginning for the Franchise
In The Forever Purge the audience follows the story of Adela and Juan, an immigrant couple who work in Texas, she in a local business and he in a ranch. Having safely spent the night of The Purge, they report to work the next day only to be met by a group of Purgers who are determined to perpetuate the celebration of The Purge beyond 12 hours a year.
With the country plunged into chaos by these extremist groups willing to murder freely, the film ends by presenting a United States divided between those who are in favor and those who are against The Purge, so the sixth installment will have to address this issue.
The setting in which the next film in the franchise takes place will possibly be plunged into absolute anarchy, something that would be very interesting within the universe of The Purge.
