The Nintendo Museum will open in Kyoto next year

Nintendo has given an update on its museum project.

Previously called the Nintendo Gallery, the building will now officially be known as the Nintendo Museum.

“At the Nintendo Museum, a wide variety of Nintendo products from the company’s history will be displayed,” Nintendo’s Shinya Takahashi said during the latest Nintendo Direct presentation.

Nintendo hopes construction on the Nintendo Museum will be completed in March 2024, with an opening date to be confirmed at a later time.

The Nintendo Museum will be located at the site of the Nintendo Uji Ogura Plant in Kyoto’s Uji city, which was built in 1969 to help with the manufacture of playing and Hanafuda cards, and to servce as a customer service centre where product repairs took place.

These functions were transferred to Nintendo’s other plant in Uji city, however, meaning for a while the building was sitting unused.

In 2021 Nintendo revealed that it was going to transform the plant into a museum, following discussions with the city Uji. The city was in the process of redeveloping the nearby Ogura Station area, so Nintendo decided to build the Nintendo Museum as part of this redevelopment plan.

This won’t be the first time Nintendo has exhibited some of its products. The Nintendo World store in New York used to have a museum area where it would show off rare systems.

It will, however, be the first building designed to permanently exhibit key items from Nintendo’s past.
