Today is National Video Games Day in the US, and to mark the occasion, YouTube is taking a look at retro gaming on the platform, which includes everything from classic reviews to let’s plays.

A new post on the YouTube Culture and Trends blog takes a deep dive into how retro-gaming-related content has performed on the platform over the years, in a similar vein to the Mario-focused analysis the team presented earlier this year. For example, according to the post, there were 1000 times more video related to retro gaming in the first half of this year than for the same time period in 2007.

A brief video hosted by gaming influencer Jim Lazarus “Caddicarus” Caddick also shows off some of YouTube’s biggest retro gaming channels, including Gaming Historian, JRPGLife, and more. The blog post also offers a few statistics regarding retro gaming and YouTube, which include the following:

  • Retro gaming consoles make up the majority of the 100 most-viewed videos on retro gaming in the past year..
  • Each year since 2007, the NES has seen the most uploaded retro gaming content
  • The top five countries in term of retro gaming video views in 2023 so far are as follows:

    • Japan – 290 million

    • Brazil – 65 million
    • United Kingdom – 59 milliom

Cinemassacre, the channel behind the Angry Video Game Nerd, is the most-viewed NES-related channel in 2023 so far, according to the blog. The channel also holds the oldest video related to the NES with more than one million views on the entire YouTube platform, which is the AVGN review of A Nightmare On Elm Street uploaded on November 7, 2006.
