‘The Marvels’ Will Center On A “Dysfunctional Family Dynamic”

Although the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film The Marvels will introduce a new superhero team, an interplanetary threat, and a new Kree antagonist, according to director Nia DaCosta, the heart of the film is really the story of a family dynamic.

The Marvels will unite Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Kamala Khan/ Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau/Photon after their powers get mysteriously intertwined. In the film, the trio will have to find a way to put aside their reservations about working together to stop Dar-Benn, A Kree accuser.

“A Sister Story”

While the film will continue the story of three popular MCU characters and promises to be full of action, DaCosta wanted to add something else to the film’s narrative.

“I thought it would be cool to map an estranged family history and sister story onto them,” the filmmaker explains.

In The Marvels, the trio of heroes will have their own unique perspectives on teaming up together. Ms. Marvel has long idealized Captain Marvel, even naming herself after the Avenger. Monica Rambeau meanwhile knew Carol Danvers when she was a child, but has perhaps grown disillusioned with the hero after Danvers didn’t return to Earth as she promised.

“Carol’s the oldest, the prodigal, then there’s the middle sister Monica, who Carol knew as a kid and promised she’d come back [to] but then never did,” DeCosta explains.

Kamala, one of the youngest MCU heroes will have be introduced to a whole new world when the Kree accuser comes knocking.

“Kamala is the youngest, who hasn’t had the experience of living with this older sister but idolizes her. Now she’s going into space and dealing with crazy space emperors. But the thing I love about Kamala is her belief in people and family.”

“Even in the midst of being around Captain Marvel and out of her depth,” DaCosta adds, “she’s preserved her strength.”
