The Marvels’ Director Talks About The New Kree Anagonist Coming To The MCU

Although Lee Pace’s Ronan the Accuser met his demise in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy when the rag-tag team of intergalactic heroes used the Power Stone to destroy the Kree villain, his presence has loomed large in the MCU.

2019’s Captain Marvel briefly showed him in 1995 visiting Earth on behalf of the Kree Empire. While there, the antagonist nearly bombed the planet in order to eliminate the Skrulls, until Carol Davnvers intervened to stop him.

While Marvel has no plans to resurrect Ronan, he will still influence the events in the upcoming film The Marvels.

Enter Dar-Benn

The upcoming film will see Carol Danvers, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau team up to do battle with another Kree Acusser, Dar-Benn.

In The Marvels‘ trailer, Dar-Benn can be seen wielding the same warhammer Ronan used in both Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel. According to director Nia DaCosta, the connection between Ronan and Dar-Benn was intentional

“Here’s what I will say about that, which in the comics is called the Universal Weapon. I would just say, for anyone watching this film, or having expectations, just know that I am deeply devoted to the comics. And so, there’s always clues there.”

While we don’t know the exact relationship between Ronan and Dar-Benn we do know some things about the new character. In The Marvels‘ trailers, Dar-Benn is shown as a revolutionary who has an axe to grind with Carol Danvers. After referring to Captain Marvel as The Annihilator, Dar-Benn blamed her for the civil war that broke out on the Kree’s homeworld.

Praise For Zawe Ashton

Although DeCasta didn’t provide any other information on The Marvels‘ main antagonist, she did praise the performance of Zawe Ashton.

“Zawe brings a lot of fun to being evil. Then, on the other end, she also brings a lot of pathos. I wanted a villain that was really fun and definitely on the wrong side of history. But you could see why they thought they were on the right side. That’s something that Zawe also brought to the table – really wanting the villain to be understandable even if you didn’t like her,” DeCosta said.

The Marvels will open in theaters on November 10.
