‘The Marvels’ Box Office Opening Is Tracking Better

The Marvels

To say that 2023 has been an uneven year for Marvel Studios would be an understatement.

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has certainly had its share of highs (Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3, Loki Season 2) it has also had some of the lowest points in its 15-year history (Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, Secret Invasion).

As Marvel continues to try and reach the highs of its pre-Endgame films, the phrase “superhero fatigue” has been thrown about by critics and fans alike.

Enter ‘The Marvels’

Marvel will get their next chance to quiet the critics when The Marvels hits theaters on November 10.

The film will serve as a sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, while also incorporating characters from the streaming series WandaVision and Ms. Marvel.

Unfortunately, based on four-week tracking numbers, The Marvels may be in trouble at the box office.

‘The Marvels’ Is Heading For a Disappointing Opening

The film is now tracking for a $75-80 million opening weekend. That number would be about 50% of the 153.4 million that 2019’s Captain Marvel brought in during its first weekend.

If The Marvels were to debut below $70 million, it would be the first Marvel film to open that low since 2015’s Ant-Man. Of the 32 MCU films, 25 of them have opened to $100 million or more domestically.

Time To Turn Things Around

The good news for The Marvels is that the film still has time to gain some momentum. Just last week, Box Office Pro reported that the film was on track to earn between $50 and $75 million.

While The Marvels has little competition in early November, the film is also being released during the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.

As such, the film’s stars, which include Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris, have been unable to promote the film.

Hopefully, The Marvels will continue to gain momentum, and we can finally put the idea of superhero fatigue to rest.
