At the 2023 Grammy Awards, Lizzo had us all feeling special, with her beautiful acceptance speech.
Lizzo was nominated for was five Grammy awards including album of the year, song of the year, best pop solo performance, best pop vocal album and record of the year, which she ended up wining for “About Damn Time.”
Lizzo did not fail to point out the significance of the award in an Instagram post after the Grammys. “The last time a black woman won Record of The Year was Whitney Houston for ‘I Will Always Love You’.” She said “I don’t take this lightly, thank you.”
During the ceremony Lizzo took the stage to perform a medley of her hit songs “Special” and the award-winning “About Damn Time.” However it was the moving speech she gave while accepting her award that really captured everyone’s attention, and for good reason.
Acceptances speches are a platform that many artists have used to call attention to topics of importance that they are passionate about, highlight talented individuals or simply give thanks. Lizzo did not miss her chance to do the same. Calling attention to a topic very close to her heart.
While she accepted the award for record of the year, Lizzo delivered an inspiring and powerful speech. She began by saying, “Let me tell you something. Me and Adele are having a good time just enjoying ourselves, rooting for our friends. This is an amazing night, this is so unexpected.”
She then went on to dedicate her win to the late Prince. “When we lost Prince, I decided to dedicate my life to making positive music. I was like, ‘I don’t care if my positivity bothers you — what’s wrong with you?’ ” she said with a laugh.
“Positive and feel-good music wasn’t mainstream at that point and I felt very misunderstood.” She went on to say, “I felt on the outside looking in, but I stayed true to myself because I wanted to make the world a better place, so I had to be that change to be a better place, and now, I look around and there’s all these songs about loving our body and being comfortable in our skin and feeling f—ing good and I’m just so proud to be a part of it!”
Lizzo is someone who never fails to be herself, and is always advocating for body image, self love and positivity. Most of her songs are considered anthems for body positivity, her social media posts challenge the norms of body image and her shapewear brand Yitty is designed for all body types.
After impressing upon her fans and the audience to “stay true to yourself,” and thanking her family, she then gave a special shoutout to Beyoncé, who earlier in the evening made history by becoming the most decorated artist in Grammy history after receiving her 32nd Grammy.
