The Flash Season 9 Sets Up New Arrowverse Spinoff Despite Shows Ending

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for The Flash season 9, episode 7, “Wildest Dreams.”Despite the Arrowverse seemingly coming to a close, The Flash season 9 seems to be setting up a spinoff show for the superhero Dreamer. First introduced in Supergirl season 4 and played by Nicole Maines, Dreamer was the daughter of an alien immigrant to Earth from the planet Naltor and heir to a legacy of dream-related superpowers, including prophetic dreams and astral projection. She was also notable as the first transgender superhero in television history.

Dreamer became a constant companion to Kara Danvers, both as a crime fighter and in the newsroom at CatCo Worldwide Media, where they both worked as reporters. The character was popular, and there was talk of Dreamer’s adventures continuing in a spinoff after Supergirl came to an end after six seasons. The Flash season 9 seemed to build upon this idea when Dreamer played a prominent guest role in the episode “Wildest Dreams.”

The Flash Season 9 Sets Up A Dreamer Spinoff (& It Makes Sense)

The Flash season 9 episode 7, “Wildest Dreams,” opened with Dreamer exploring a surreal dreamscape, searching for a legendary source of Naltorian dream energy that might increase her powers. While there, Dreamer was attacked by a cloaked woman and had a vision of Iris West-Allen, who told her, “it’s all about control,” before dropping dead. This prompted Dreamer to seek out Iris West-Allen in the real world, where they both were drawn into the Dream Realm by the cloaked woman.

In the end, Dreamer and Iris both helped one another to work through their respective traumas. The cloaked woman was revealed as the first Naltorian woman to master the power of dreams, and she accepted Dreamer as an apprentice after Dreamer accepted the idea that she should relax and embrace her powers rather than strictly trying to regulate their use. Dreamer parted ways with Iris and Team Flash confident that “my potential is beyond my wildest dreams,” suggesting that she would go on to study with her new spirit guide.

This seemed like the start of a new chapter in Dreamer’s life and a fine start for a spinoff show. However, with The Flash season 9 building to a grand finale for the Arrowverse Earth-Prime setting, it seems incredibly odd that the series would devote one of its precious final episodes to continuing the story of a supporting character from Supergirl. And yet, it makes sense given how popular Dreamer has become as a character, not only in the Arrowverse setting but in other media.

Could A Dreamer Spinoff Actually Happen In The Arrowverse Now?

Supergirl's Dreamer

Since Supergirl season 6 ended, Dreamer has been introduced into the mainstream DC Comics Universe. The comic books featuring Nia Nul, many of them written by Nicole Maines, have been big sellers for DC Comics, and the character has been featured prominently in Lazarus Planet and Superman: Son of Kal-El. Given that, the previous excitement regarding a Dreamer spinoff show, and the fact that The CW is still moving forward with a Justice U series set in the Arrowverse focused on John Diggle training young superheroes, there is no reason why The Flash couldn’t kickstart a show focused upon the continuing adventures of Dreamer.

The Flash season 9 continues on Wednesdays on The CW.
