The Flash 2 Could Happen At DC, But It Needs To Hit A Specific Box Office Target

The Flash 2 is reportedly ready to go, but it will only happen if The Flash movie reaches a specific box office milestone. After many delays and behind-the-scenes issues, The Flash movie is arriving in theaters ahead of an upcoming DC Universe reboot. As such, whether The Flash 2 was a real possibility remained to be seen.

Now, according to The Wrap, The Flash 2’s script is ready, and the film could happen at DC, but only if The Flash comes close to The Batman’s $770 million worldwide box office. According to the report, David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who wrote Aquaman, penned the script for The Flash 2. Should a sequel happen, The Flash 2s story could perhaps exist outside of James Gunn’s DC Universe, working as a standalone story in the style of The Batman – Part 2 and Joker: Folie à Deux.

Will The Flash Be A Box Office Success?

The Flash movie is currently eying a $70 million domestic opening, which would put it close to Aquaman’s domestic opening weekend. Matt Reeves’ The Batman, a standalone film with no ties to the DCEU, premiered to $128.5 million at the domestic box office. Aquaman’s global box office was bigger than The Batman’s, though, as Aquaman had impressive legs and a strong overseas performance. In other words, despite the current opening weekend estimates, The Flash could still match The Batman’s box office.

However, if The Flash opens closer to Aquaman than to The Batman, it will have to have strong legs. The Flash currently has a 70% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, whereas The Batman finished its run with an 85% Rotten Tomatoes score. The Flash’s box office performance also depends on how the film will play out overseas. Aquaman, for example, grossed more than $813 million outside of the United States alone.

The Flash’s budget is reportedly around $200 million. That number is similar to The Batman’s final reported budget, which explains why the studio is aiming at The Batman’s box office for The Flash. A sequel to The Batman was announced not too long after the film finished its theatrical run. Therefore, whether The Flash 2 will happen will likely be settled shortly after the final numbers for The Flash’s box office are in.
