The arrival of the Fantastic Four will mark a major moment in the history of the MCU.
Not only will Marvel’s first family finally be joining the fold, but the film will also kick off Marvel’s Phase 6.
Helmed by WandaVision director Matt Shankman the film will arrive in theaters on February 14, 2025.
A Troubled Development
While the Fantastic Four will be a tentpole franchise for Marvel and Disney, development of the film has been rocky.
First, news broke that the film’s original director Jon Watts (Spider-Man: No Way Home) has left the project, as have screenwriters Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer.
Now however, news has broken that Avatar: The Way of Water screenwriter Josh Friedman has assumed writing duties on the Fantastic Four.
A New Tone For Marvel?
The change in screenwriters on the Fantastic Four may signal a shift in tone for the film.
Former Fantastic Four writers Kaplan and Springer are perhaps best known for their comedy writing. The duo is currently working on Rebel Wilson’s K-Pop: Lost in America and Disaster Wedding.
Friedman on the other hand is known for his sci-fi credentials. In addition to his work on Avatar: The Way of Water, Friedman co-wrote War of the Worlds and Terminator: Dark Fate.
Recent Criticism
In recent years, Marvel has received some criticism for its over-reliance on humor in its latest films. Thor: Love and Thunder and Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania both received this criticism, and struggled with the fans and critics alike.
With Friedman now on board, it appears as if Marvel may shifting the tone of its future releases, specifically with the Fantastic Four.
