The Eras Tour Eyes the Top Spot at Box Office Once More Despite Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon

The Eras Tour Eyes the Top Spot at Box Office Once More Despite Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon

Summary

  • Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour is expected to top the box office this weekend.
  • Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, despite positive reviews, is unlikely to surpass Swift’s concert film.
  • Swift’s devoted fan base, the Swifties, and the film’s high Rotten Tomatoes scores give it a strong advantage over Scorsese’s star-studded film.

Don’t expect something quite as earth-shattering as Barbenheimer when Martin Scorsese and Taylor Swift go head-to-head this weekend in theaters. Swift’s concert movie, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, enters its second weekend of release after making a mind-boggling $123.5 million worldwide (per Box Office Mojo). And Scorsese’s highly anticipated Killers of the Flower Moon finally descends on cinemas. But as good as the three-hour+ epic might turn out to be, Scorsese is likely going to have to settle for second place at the box office.

Killers of the Flower Moon is currently tracking to make somewhere between $20 million and $25 million (per Deadline) over its first weekend of release domestically. However, some sources like Variety and Boxoffice Pro forecast better returns upward of $30 million to even $40 million. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour is looking to add another $35 million to $40 million to its already gaudy total. The Eras Tour brought in $92.8 million in the United States, so even a drop-off of 70%, which is highly unlikely, would ultimately be enough to take the No. 1 slot at the box office. It all depends on if Killers of the Flower Moon can somehow lean into those higher predictions.

While Killers of the Flower Moon boasts the star power of Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and its legendary filmmaker, Scorsese, the singing sensation has the devoted backing of her immense fan base, the Swifties. And ultimately, they will likely help Taylor Swift come out as this weekend’s victor at the box office.

Can Killers of the Flower Moon Somehow Win the Weekend?

Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon won’t likely make enough money to lay claim to the No. 1 spot at this weekend’s box office. That honor will almost certainly go to Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour. So far, the concert film has looked virtually unbeatable, and Scorsese’s latest movie venture will need to come up with a miracle to knock Swift off her lofty perch.

The good news for Scorsese is that Killers of the Flower Moon is impressing the critics. At the time of this writing, the three-hour+ movie boasts a 95% on the Tomatometer against 151 reviews. In most cases, that would be a good enough score to beat, or at the very least rival, the competition. But that’s not the case here.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour continues to post a perfect Tomatometer rating of 100%. And the fans have all but spoken with their 99% audience score. Those Swifties coming right out of the theaters have also declared the concert film a massive hit, as The Eras Tour has received the all-but-impossible perfection of the “A+” CinemaScore. Look for Scorsese versus Swift this weekend at a theater near you.
