The Dark Knight Trilogy Director Explains Why He Doesn't Want To Talk About Superhero Movies

The Dark Knight trilogy director Christopher Nolan gets brutally honest about why he doesn’t have any interest in talking about superhero movies when asked about the DC film, The Batman. Matt Reeves’ The Batman became the latest incarnation of the Caped Crusader in 2022, with Robert Pattinson as a younger Dark Knight. As it became a commercial and critical success, The Batman – Part II is in the works, as Reeves is planning to flesh out his Elseworlds-based universe.

Given his massive success with The Dark Knight trilogy, the world is obviously curious about what Nolan thinks about the later incarnations of Batman in live-action. In a new Variety cover story, Nolan was asked if he had seen Reeves’ The Batman, and what he thought about it. However, the British filmmaker got candid as he shared the following as to why he didn’t really want to answer that specific question:

“If I start talking about comic book movies, that would be the only thing anybody pays any attention to in the article.”

Why The Batman Is Compared To Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy So Much

The Dark Knight trilogy became a defining block in the superhero movie genre, as Nolan’s film series kicked off during a time when studios were still not ready to fully invest in comic book properties. With The Dark Knight still being one of the top-rated comic book movies of all time, whenever new DC films come out, they are almost always compared to Nolan’s 2008 installment. In the case of Reeves’ The Batman, there are a few key factors why it gets put in the same conversation as The Dark Knight trilogy.

One of the huge elements that both movies share in common is the sense of a grounded Batman world, as neither film was connected to any larger DC Universe, allowing them to focus on being as close to a gritty real-life rendition as the source material would allow. The Batman, very much like The Dark Knight movies, took a deeper dive into Bruce both in and out of the cowl and exploring his layers. Ultimately, it is not a bad thing for comparisons to be made between The Dark Knight trilogy and The Batman, as the former is what made the latter possible nearly ten years after The Dark Knight Rises ending concluded the previous series.

Prior to landing the gig in The Batman, Pattinson actually starred in Nolan’s Tenet in 2020.

Even though they have things in common, The Batman was also able to tap into new territory for the Caped Crusader’s movie legacy. Time will tell what other similarities The Batman – Part II will have to Nolan’s The Dark Knight films as Warner Bros. Discovery gets ready to resume work on the highly anticipated sequel. Until The Batman – Part II comes out, the world can relive The Batman through streaming and on Blu-Ray/DVD, as well as Nolan’s entire The Dark Knight trilogy.
