Remember when video game movies used to suck? They attempted to capture the spirit of the video games by somewhat replicating them, but ended up missing the mark. In an era of (so far so) good video game adaptations, it seems like people have either forgotten that early titles were not that lucky, or they just wanted to ironically appreciate the past. This can be seen in this week’s Netflix Top 10 results.
It has been revealed that the 2016 film, Assassin’s Creed, earned a spot on Netflix’s Top 10 Global charts as the 5th most-watched film for the week of June 12 – 18, marking the first time this movie entered the upper echelons of the rankings with 5.4 million hours watched. The film was tied with a 2023 film, The Mother, which, ironically, is also an assassin movie starring Jennifer Lopez.
While both films received low reviews from critics, according to Rotten Tomatoes, it seems like audiences enjoyed The Mother more since it earned an average score of 63 percent. Meanwhile, audiences gave Assassin’s Creed a low score of 42 percent. Were people watching these two films and wondering if they had any similarities, or did they just want a kick from some campy and terribly produced video game adaptations since The Last of Us: Season 2 is currently on hold due to the Writers’ Strike, and the fate of The Legend of Zelda movie isn’t set in stone just yet?
Assassin’s Creed is a dystopian science-fiction action film, starring Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, and Jeremy Irons. The film tried to capture the spirit of the games by showcasing the use of technology to relive the life of an assassin in order to find the location of the Apple of Eden. The film has a ton of references to the first few games, but unfortunately, it didn’t hit the mark since it earned $10 million during its domestic opening and $240 million in the worldwide box office.
