“The Amateur”: A Sharp Twist on the Spy-Thriller Formula

In The Amateur, Rami Malek steps into the role of Charlie Heller, a CIA cryptographer whose world is shattered when his wife is killed in a London terrorist attack. But this isn’t your typical revenge-fueled action flick. Instead of raw muscle or elite combat skills, Charlie brings something different to the table—his brilliant mind.

As he uncovers that the attack was linked to mercenaries involved in an off-the-books CIA operation—one his corrupt boss is desperately trying to cover up—Charlie blackmails his way into agency training. Branded “an amateur” by the hardened agents around him, he quickly proves them wrong, not by becoming a traditional spy, but by using his intelligence in unexpected and often quietly thrilling ways.

The film is genuinely exciting, with a slow-burn suspense that keeps you hooked. It doesn’t rely on over-the-top stunts—instead, it draws you in with sharp storytelling and well-executed tension. Watching Charlie’s revenge plan unfold is like piecing together a high-stakes puzzle, where each move is part of a larger, meticulously designed game.

Rami Malek delivers a brilliant performance, effortlessly portraying a man driven by grief, rage, and resolve. His chemistry with Laurence Fishburne, who plays a seasoned CIA figure, is a standout element. The two are highlight together—commanding the screen with a mix of gravitas and surprising humor. Their scenes add a welcome bit of levity to an otherwise intense narrative and offer some of the film’s most memorable moments. We also see a great performance from Rachel Brosnahan as Charlie’s wife.

While critics have pointed out that the pacing drags in parts and the action lacks the high-octane punch of its genre peers, there’s a different kind of satisfaction in watching Charlie outwit rather than outfight his enemies. As a writer, it’s fascinating to see how the plot structure leans into subtle setups and payoffs that build toward a surprisingly feel-good ending.

Overall, The Amateur is a gripping, well-crafted thriller that stands out in a genre often dominated by explosions and chase scenes. Thats not to say this film does not have any of those. It’s a film that values the intelligence of its character over all. Directed by James Hawes, the movie delivers a tightly written narrative with emotional weight, compelling performances, and a unique perspective on revenge. With its smart pacing, standout performances and a plot that rewards patient viewers, The Amateur proves to be a truly great film—one that lingers in your mind long after the credits roll.

The Amateur may not deliver explosive action throughout, but it offers something more nuanced—a cerebral spy thriller with a satisfying emotional core. It’s not your average high-action spy drama, and that’s exactly what makes it so special.

The Amateur is in cinemas now.
