The Hollywood Foreign Press Association returned to TV after a one-year hiatus with the 80th Golden Globe Awards, back on the air on NBC, streaming on Peacock and hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael. The show saw a variety of Hollywood’s best in entertainment, some walk away with their first Golden Globe and some honored for a lifetime in the industry. Here are some of the highlights of the 2023 Golden Globes.
Steven Spielberg won the Golden Globe for his semi-autobiographical drama “The Fabelmans”, which makes this his 9th Golden Globe award and his 4th for directing. The Fabelmans won Best Picture Drama while Spielberg won Best Director. Spielberg calls The Fabelmans “An Act of courage” he goes on to say “Everything I’ve done up to this point has made me ready to finally be honest about the fact that it’s not easy to be a kid,” Spielberg said. “Everybody sees me as a success story… But nobody really knows who we are until we’re courageous enough to tell everyone.” He continues, “I spent a lot of time trying to figure out when I could tell that story, and I figured out when I turned 74 years old. I said, ‘You better do it now.’ And I’m really, really happy I did.”

In a surprise twist, dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin defeats the acclaimed “Everything Everywhere All at Once for Best motion picture — musical or comedy, “I can’t believe it. It was an honor to be nominated against so many brilliant films this year so many new friends,” said writer and directer Martin McDonagh. Collin Farrell won for Best Actor – musical or comedy. He thanked McDonagh in his speech “Fourteen years ago, you put me working with Brendan Gleeson, my dance partner, and you changed the trajectory of my life forever in ways that I will, begrudgingly, be grateful to you for the rest of my days.” He said referring to the 2008 film In Bruges which McDonagh directed. Banshees was the most nominated film at the Golden Globes with eight nods in total.

When Guillermo del Toro sets his mind to something, he can do anything. Writer, director and producer Guillermo del Toro also made history as the first Latino ever to win the animated feature category. Netflix just became the first streamer ever to win the category. In his acceptance speech he says “animation is cinema, animation is not a genre for kids, it’s a medium.”

It’s happening again, because just as you thought Game of Thrones was over, its prequel series House of the Dragon, is taking over, one of the most binge worthy series of 2022 was named winner of the Drama category, House of Dragon did something that Game of Thrones could not, win a Golden Globe. After thanking everyone in his acceptance speech, Executive producer Miguel Sapochnik praises the show Severance saying he wishes House of Dragons could have been like that, “If I could have made ‘House of the Dragon’ like ‘Severance’ I would have, but that would have been a bit weird,” he said.

It was a good night for the Abbot Elementary staff as well, because not only did Quinta Brunson win best Actress and Tyler James Williams win Best Supporting Actor in a musical or comedy, in his acceptance speech Tyler said but Abbot Elementary won Best Comedy series of the night, even beating Wednesday which was nominated for the first time. “I created this show because I love comedy. There are so many people in this room who are the reason why I’m here,” said creator and star Quinta Brunson in her acceptance speech, “During a very tough time in this country, I’m so grateful ‘Abbott Elementary’ can make people laugh.” Quinta goes on to mention how her show has resonated with people she didn’t even imagine. “Thank you for believing in this show about a group of teachers from Philadelphia. It has resonated with the world in a way that I couldn’t even imagine it.” In Tyler’s acceptance speech he goes on to say “I pray this is a win for Gregory Eddie and for his story and stories like his, that we understand his story is just as important as all the other stories that have to be told out here” he said. “Abbott Elementary” had the most nominations of any television show, five and they won three.

Speaking of comedy, this year Eddie Murphy was the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille award. The award is bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment”. Tracy morgan presented the award alongside Jamie Lee Curtis and gave a moving dpeech about Murphy and how his career has influenced him. During his acceptance speech, Eddie Murphy made a shocking and of course hilarious joke to THE Will Smith Oscars slap, he started out by saying “This is a long time in the making, and I appreciate it,” and then moved on to crack a joke “I want to let you know that there is a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity and peace of mind. Pay your taxes, mind your business and keep’s Will Smith’s wife name out your mouth.” Classic Eddie Murphy.

The White Lotus which has become one of everyone’s favorite shows took away the award for best limited series, in his speech Mike White thanked his amazing cast and said “I would take a bullet for you guys. Not on the heart but maybe on the foot.” He went on to say “It’s very gratifying to have this moment.” and Jennifer Coolidge won a supporting actress honor for her hilarious performance in The White Lotus season 2.

Evan Peters took home a well deserved win for his brilliant portrayal of Jeffrey Dahmer in the Actor in a limited series, anthology series or television motion picture category. He previously spoke about how hard it was to play this role “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” as he had to completely immerse himself in this character, in his speech he thanked the HFPA, Ryan Murphy and lastly he thanked the fans, “And last, but most importantly, I want to thank everyone out there who watched the show” he says it was “a difficult one to make, a difficult one to watch, but I sincerely hope some good came out of it.” This is Evan Peters first Golden Globe win, this category also included Andrew Garfield, Sebastian Stan, Taron Egerton and Colin Firth.

Ryan Murphy was honored with the Carol Burnett Award, presented for achievement in television, his friend and “Pose” Star Billy Porter presented Murphy with the Award, in a moving speech Porter called Murphy a “trailblazer” and an “ally.” Murphy took the stage and gave a shout out to his “Pose” star MJ Rodriguez as she was the first trans woman to win a Golden Globe in 2022 but last year’s show wasn’t televised. “It’s hard being an LGBTQ kid in America,” Murphy says, in his moving speech he goes on to say “I’ve dedicated most of my lifetime achievement speech here tonight to these actors I’ve worked with to make a point of hope and progress,” Murphy said. “When I was a young person at home in the seventies watching ‘The Carol Burnett Show,’ I never, ever saw a person like me getting an award or even being a character on a TV show. For 25 years that’s all I’ve ever tried to do here in Hollywood,” he said. “My mission was to take the invisible, the unloved and make them the heroes I longed to see but never did in pop culture.” he spends the rest of his speech honoring queer actors, ” he concludes by saying “there is a way forward. Use them as your north stars.”

Wakanda Forever indeed. Angela Basset just became the first performer from a Marvel movie to win a Golden Globe. Everyone who watched Black Panther: Wakanda Forever agrees on one thing. Angela Basset gave an absolutely incredible and powerful performance. The stunning Angela Basset won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. In her moving speech she goes on to say “I stand here grateful to the Hollywood Foreign Press for giving me this honor along with Wakanda Forever. We embarked on this journey together with love. We mourned, we loved, we healed. And we will be surrounding each and every day by the light in the spirit of Chadwick Boseman.” She goes on to say “And to the Marvel fans, thank you for embracing these characters and showing us so much love. We just made history with this nomination and with this award. It belongs to all of you, all of us.” A well deserved honor indeed. Chadwick Boseman would be so proud if he could see her now.

Last year Everything, Everywhere, All At Once took everyone by storm, with it’s trippy adventure and crazy story that had everyone hooked. Not to mention the film’s incredible performances. Michelle Yeoh and took home the awards for best actor in a motion picture and Ke Huy Quan for supporting actor for “Everything Everywhere All at Once”. In her acceptance speech Michelle spoke about the hardships for women in Hollywood, especially women of a different race, “I’m just going to stand here and take this all in. Forty years, not letting go of this,” says Yeoh as she held her Golden Globe tightly “It’s been an amazing journey and an incredible fight to be here today, but I think it’s worth it.” She goes on to say “I remember when I first came to Hollywood it was a dream come true, until I got here.” After mentioning she turned 60 last year she says “All of you women understand this: As the days and years become bigger, it seems opportunities become smaller as well.” Michelle Calls Everything, Everywhere a gift.

“You were an icon and a rebel and I love you so much.” Says Austin Butler as he gives thanks to Elvis Presley in his speech. The former Disney channel star turned movie star accepted the Golden Globe for Best Actor in A Drama for his role in “Elvis” even beating Brendan Fraser and Hugh Jackman. This is Austin’s first Golden Globe Award.
