Thanos creator Jim Starlin has seen The Flash and has a few things to say about how DC celebrates comic book writers very differently than Marvel does.
This week The Flash finally hits theaters, being one of the most anticipated superhero movies of recent times, and also one of the ones that have suffered the most from delays caused by the pandemic, changes in Warner Bros. Discovery, and the scandals starring its main star, Ezra Miller.
Since months before the debut, several actors and celebrities such as Tom Cruise and Stephen King have praised the work done by Andy Muschietti in the film, and now the creator of one of the greatest villains in the Marvel universe joins them.
Jim Starlin shared a brief review of The Flash on his social media, where he celebrates an important difference between the two largest comic book companies:
“Was really surprised by how much I liked the new Flash movie! One terrific flick. I was especially pleased to see the creators of the Flash acknowledged early in the end credits instead of way after the caterers and so many others. Wish the Marvel movies would do the same.”
Starlin is one of those responsible for one of the stories that was central to the development of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Infinity Gauntlet, which was adapted as one of the main arcs that led to the events of two of the franchise’s most celebrated films, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
Who’s The Flash and Who Created Him?
The famous speedster appeared for the first time in 1940 in Flash Comics #1, created by the writer Gardner Fox and the artist Harry Lampert. The character has great speed that allows him, among other things, to travel through time and that is exactly what the movie will explore.
The hero has had four popular iterations throughout DC’s publications, with Barry Allen being the most recognizable. Before him, Jay Garrick was in charge of carrying the Fastest Man Alive title, while Wally West and Bart Allen came after. Each of them was part of one of DC’s great hero teams, such as Justice League, Justice Society of America, Teen Titans, and Young Justice.
Throughout its history, various actors have had the opportunity to give life to different versions of the character, the first being John Wesley Shipp, who debuted as Barry Allen and years later in the Arrowverse would play Jay Garrick.
The most recent names to don the Scarlet Speedster suit are Grant Gustin and Ezra Miller, who had the chance to work together on the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover.
In The Flash, Miller plays Barry Allen years after being introduced briefly in Batman v Superman and officially in 2017’s Justice League. The movie adapts one of the most popular stories within DC’s mythology, Flashpoint, that finds Barry in a different reality where his mother is alive but where he also doesn’t have his powers since metahumans don’t exist.
