Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn thinks Taron Egerton would be much better suited to joining the DCU as Lex Luthor, rather than adding his name to the MCU roster as Wolverine. Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Vaughn declared that Egerton as Superman villain Lex Luthor would be “amazing,” and thinks major changes need to be made when recasting Wolverine.
“I think he’d be better as Lex Luthor. I think he’d be an amazing Luthor. He shouldn’t be Wolverine, I don’t think. I don’t think he’s right for it … Hugh’s brilliant as Wolverine, but I would go back to what the comic is, do really small little grizzly tough guy.”
When host Josh Horowitz mentioned that The Long Good Friday and Who Framed Roger Rabbit star Bob Hoskins had been suggested as Wolverine way back when, Vaughn felt that a similar actor will need to be found to take over from Hugh Jackman.
“Right, that’s what I would do. I don’t know who it is, but I think Hugh has made it so iconic, that if you go into that, whoever is trying to do the Hugh version… buggered.”
For now, Hugh Jackman is all set to reprise the role of Wolverine in the upcoming MCU outing Deadpool 3, in which he will star alongside Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth. There are currently rumors circulating that Jackman will appear again as Wolverine, and for the final time, in the Avengers sequel Avengers: Secret Wars, which is not due for release until 2027.
Further rumors have claimed that the likes of Taron Egerton and Daniel Radcliffe will feature in cameo appearances as variants of Wolverine in Deadpool 3. But with the sequel having now lost its release date, we could be waiting a while before finding out the truth.
Matthew Vaughn Thinks Taron Egerton Would Make an ‘Amazing’ Lex Luthor
While many fans feel that the Black Bird star would make a great Wolverine, Vaughn is assertive in his opinion that Egerton would make a far better Lex Luthor in the DCU. He added:
“I think he would make an amazing, intelligent villain with depth.”
It has now been revealed that David Corenswet will suit up as the Man of Steel in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy, but we still do not know who will play Lex Luthor. Or even if Luthor will appear. Rumors have claimed that both Alexander and Bill Skarsgård are favorites for the role, with other reports saying that Nicolas Hoult was in contention for either Superman or Lex.
Would you rather see Taron Egerton as Lex Luthor or Wolverine? With his varied roles in the likes of the Kingsman franchise, Rocketman, Tetris, and the Apple TV+ series Black Bird, the actor could arguably excel at both.
As for Mathew Vaughn, he has revealed that discussions have taken place between himself and James Gunn regarding the DCU, but for now is plenty busy with the likes of the upcoming spy outing Argylle and plans for Kingsman 3 and a sequel to The King’s Man.
