The fourth and final season of “Superman & Lois” has proven to be not only a powerful end to the series but arguably its best season yet with an unforgettable series finale that brought the tears. From jaw-dropping plot twists to emotional moments that dive deep into Clark Kent’s identity, the final season of “Superman & Lois” has truly raised the bar, delivering an experience fans won’t soon forget.
In the first half of the season, the show focuses on the iconic Death of Superman storyline with a fresh take. “Superman & Lois” didn’t just rehash the comics but added its own emotional approach. The first four episodes hit fans hard when Superman was killed by Doomsday in a brutal battle, bringing the hero’s journey to a seemingly tragic end. But just as fans were reeling, the show threw in a twist that no one expected: General Sam Lane sacrifices himself to save Superman by injecting himself with a serum that allowed his heart to be used to save Superman. The moment was a gut punch for fans who’ve followed these characters, and it set the stage for what’s become a season full of surprises.

What really turned heads this season came in Episode 7, “A Regular Guy,” when Clark Kent made the decision to reveal his true identity to the world. While revealing Superman’s secret identity isn’t a popular move in comic lore — it briefly happened in 2015’s Truth storyline before DC “reset” the idea — “Superman & Lois” decided to explore this bold storyline in a way that paid homage to the show’s essence of family and friendship.

After Superman’s death in the center of Smallville, the town’s residents begin piecing together the truth. Clark’s attempts to keep his identity under wraps just aren’t working. When Emmitt Pegrande, a character with a grudge against the Kents who was previously driven out of town by Clark publicly accuses him of being Superman and shoots him in the town diner, Clark finally stops hiding. In one powerful moment, he takes off his glasses, suits up, and openly reveals his secret to the people of Smallville. This was one of the best moments in the show — and arguably one of the best Superman moments ever.
Throughout the season, Lex Luthor emerged as the central villain, orchestrating a campaign of terror that included unleashing Doomsday and forcing Clark to reveal his identity. The final episodes delivered everything fans could have hoped for. Including Jonathan finally getting his powers. The series finale featured an epic battle between Superman and Lex Luthor, who donned his iconic comic book armor for their last showdown. After a bloody fight with Doomsday and a climactic defeat of Luthor, Clark and his family were finally free from Lex’s reign of terror.
Then as things came to a close, the show offered a 1 year flash-forward that gave us a look at where our beloved characters were. The series finale saw Lana Lang and John Henry Irons marry in Smallville, we also finally get to see Jonathan and Jordan suit up with their father similar to the comics. As Clark reflects on what he’s leaving behind, an emotional montage narrated by Clark explores his legacy, as well as his life growing old together with Lois. We see their sons Jon and Jonathan starting families of their own, and Clark and Lois becoming loving grandparents. But the bittersweet tone deepened when Lois’s cancer returns, and she passed away. Hoechlin’s performance in this scene was heartwrenching. As Clark mentions at the start of the epilogue, General Lane’s heart gave him 32 years, so as Clark carried on after Lois died, he adopted a dog he named Krypto—a subtle nod to the iconic Krypto the Superdog. Ultimately, Clark’s life ended peacefully, marking the end of his incredible journey. The finale delivered a heart-wrenching moment as Clark entered the afterlife, surrounded by his family, friends, and the love of his life, Lois. The best series finales are those that give you closure, and “Superman & Lois” most definitely did.

For a superhero show on network TV, “Superman & Lois” continued to exceed expectations in ways few could have predicted. Between its incredible movie-grade cinematography, high-stakes battles, deep emotional beats, incredible performances, and bold choices, it’s clear this show has gone out with a bang.
This show has truly done justice to the legacy of Superman and the fans. While some may be disappointed by the show’s cancellation, this season — and especially its finale — ensures “Superman & Lois” leaves an unforgettable legacy as one of the most heartfelt adaptations of Superman, not to be forgotten.
