Suicide Squad requires an online connection, even in single-player

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will require players to have an internet connection to play, even in single-player.

That’s according to an entry in the game’s newly-published official FAQ, which reads: “Yes, an internet connection is required to play Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League solo or via online co-op.”

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League allows players to play the game in single-player, or up to four-player co-op online.

No reason is given for the need to have an internet connection, however, it’s likely related to the game’s drop in, drop out co-op gameplay.  It also means that should Warner Bros. end support for the game’s servers in the future, copies of the game, even physical ones, would likely become unplayable.

While many modern games include DRM which requires a one-off online check to prevent piracy, a persistent online requirement remains relatively uncommon for modern games with single-player modes, even in titles that are primarily co-op focused but have single-player elements.

Recent co-op titles Gotham Knights, Monster Hunter Rise and Marvel’s Avengers all allow for offline play in single-player mode. Meanwhile, It Takes Two, which can only be played with two players, allows for offline play during local ‘couch co-op’.

When it was originally released, 2021’s Back 4 Blood required an online connection even when playing solo with AI teammates, but a later update removed this requirement, allowing players to play through the story offline.

The upcoming Arkane title Redfall will also require an online conntection even when playing in single-player, Bethesda recently confirmed.

New gameplay footage of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was shown earlier today during Sony’s State of Play broadcast.

The presentation also confirmed that the game will feature a battle pass, which Rocksteady claims the items included in it will only be cosmetic. Post-game support including new characters and missions was also announced.
