IFC Films has dropped a long-awaited first teaser for its film Biosphere, starring Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us) and Mark Duplass (The Morning Show), which is slated for release in theaters and on demand on July 7th.
The sci-fi pic marks the feature debut of veteran producer Mel Eslyn, who’s best known to some as President of Mark and Jay Duplass’ production company, Duplass Brother Productions. It’s set in the not-too-distant future and tells the story of Billy (Duplass) and Ray (Brown), lifelong best friends who also happen to be the last two men on earth. Their survival is largely due to Ray, a brilliant scientist who designed the custom biosphere they call home, outfitting it with both creature comforts and the necessities to sustain life on a doomed planet. But when the population of their fishpond — which supplies essential protein — begins waning, the men find themselves facing an ominous future.
Biosphere‘s trailer opens with shots of Billy and Ray’s daily routine in the biosphere, watching as they run laps, harvest tomatoes, throw a ball around and play chess. Each moment is tinged with a sense of claustrophobia and paranoia.
“Are you not curious what’s going on out there?” Billy asks Ray, presumably alluding to life outside of their dwelling.
“Everything is feeling a bit…unbelievable,” acknowledges Ray.
World premiering at last year’s Toronto Film Festival, Biosphere was written by Eslyn and Duplass. Eslyn also produced alongside Zackary Drucker, Maddie Buis and Shuli Harel, with Mark Duplass and Jay Duplass serving as exec producers.
Biosphere is poised to open against Screen Gems’ Insidious 5 and Bleecker Street’s thriller The Lesson, as well as Lionsgate’s comedy Joy Ride, which recently world premiered at SXSW. View the teaser for the film above.
