It’s been more than 10 years since Stephen Amell first suited up as the Green Arrow in The CW’s original series Arrow, founder of the Arrowverse. The show ended back in 2020, after eight seasons but the actor played the character once again in the last installment of The Flash, the only survivor of the popular tv universe based on DC Comics characters. And he still hopes there’s more to come.
After the merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery, with David Zaslav taking control of the company, a new beginning was announced for the DC franchise within the company. Peter Safran and James Gunn were announced last year as co-CEOs for DC Studios, a division in charge of every single project related to the comicbooks brand, including movies, tv shows and even videogames.
Gunn and Safran are actively working on the future of the franchise, with the first phase titled Gods & Monsters already in motion. And even though Green Arrow it’s not part of the heroes that will be part of the first batch of projects, it might appear in the future. And Stephen Amell wants to play him again.
While speaking with TVLine while promoting his participation on The Flash’s final season, Amell made it very clear that he still wants to play the character, especially beyond television:
“We had a good run on The CW in the Arrowverse, but the idea of 22 or 23 episodes a year…. That’s a very specific way to make television, with act breaks and all those things. I had had my fill of playing Arrow in that particular medium. But the idea of going back and doing something on a limited basis, or doing a movie it’d be interesting.”
Stephen Amell Isn’t the Only Former CW Star Interested in Playing Green Arrow
Way before Amell, Grant Gustin and the rest of the Arrowverse team made their debuts, another successful tv show tried to build its own Justice League. We’re talking about Smallville, the Tom Welling starred show that centered on a young Clark Kent before turning into Superman.
Smallville presented a large gallery of DC characters, including its own Green Arrow played by This is Us’ Justin Hartley. But it isn’t him who would like to play the hero again. The series also introduced an alternate version of the Scarlet Speedster, played by Kyle Gallner.
And even when Gallner was a decent Bart Allen, he’s now interested in portraying a different character. A few months ago, the actor shared a video on his social media showing his skills with the bow and arrow, letting James Gunn know he’s ready to become the next DC archer.
Created by artist George Papp and writer Mort Weisinger in 1941, Green Arrow first appeared in More Fun Comics #73. With a similar background as Batman’s, Oliver is a businessman, owner of Queen Industries and comes from a wealthy family. The character is based on Edgar Wallace’s novel The Green Archer and inspired by Robin Hood.
