There’s a good chance you missed Spin Me Round, the new Alison Brie rom-com, in the wake of Somebody I Used To Know, the other new Alison Brie rom-com. Despite their high-level similarities —same star, same genre (sort of)— these movies are actually quite different in execution. In Spin Me Round, Brie plays Amber, an ambitious yet frustrated middle manager at an Italian chain restaurant (think Olive Garden or Macaroni Grill), who gets selected to go on an all-expenses paid seminar in Italy hosted by the company’s dashing CEO (Alessandro Nivola). Amber’s dreams of an Eat Pray Love or Under The Tuscan Sun style adventure quickly go to pot, though, as she’s forced to navigate increasingly weird encounters with psychotic co-workers (Molly Shannon), the CEO’s enigmatic chief of staff (Aubrey Plaza), and a mansplaining wannabe chef (Tim Heidecker). The tone of director Jeff Baena’s film is all over the map, but if you’re in the mood for something that strikes the balance between madcap, mysterious, and sexy, Spin Me Round will surprise you.
