Spielberg and Scorsese Make History With 2024 Oscar Nominations

The iconic directors Steven Spielberg (77) and Martin Scorsese (81) have set impressive records by securing nominations for the 96th Academy Awards.

Steven Spielberg has made Oscars’ history once again. With Maestro’s Best Picture nomination, the three time Oscar winner has now produced 13 films that have been nominated for Best Picture — a record for an individual producer (since 1951, when producers were first named as nominees for Best Picture).

Spielberg previously received Best Picture nominations for his films: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), The Color Purple (1985), Schindler’s List (1993), Saving Private Ryan (1998), Munich (2005), Letters from Iwo Jima (2006), War Horse (2011), Lincoln (2012), Bridge of Spies (2015), The Post (2017), West Side Story (2021), and The Fabelmans (2022). He won Best picture for Schindler’s List is and he also won Oscars for directing Schindler’s List and for Saving Private Ryan.

Maestro received seven Oscar nominations in total, including Best Actor in a Leading Role (Cooper), Best Actress in a Leading Role (Carey Mulligan), Best Cinematography, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Sound, and Best Original Screenplay.

Meanwhile the 81-year-old icon Martin Scorsese earned his 10th Best Director nomination for Killers of the Flower Moon, breaking Steven Spielberg’s record of 9. Scorsese is now the most-nominated living movie director. Scorsese scored his first nomination 1980 for Raging Bull, and he’s since been nominated for The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), Goodfellas (1990), Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006), Hugo (2011), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), The Irishman (2019), and now Killers of the Flower Moon (2023). He won the category just once — for ‘The Departed’ in 2006.

Killers of The Flower Moon has received 10 nominations, including Best Picture, with Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro earning nominations for Actress in a Leading Role and Actor in a Supporting respectively. It was also nominated for Costume Design, Original Song, Original Score, Production Design, Achievement in Film Editing and Achievement in Cinematography.

The 96th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 10 at the Dolby® Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and will be televised live on ABC and in more than 200 territories worldwide.
