Marvel Studios swung back into theaters this weekend with Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

The fourth installment in the MCU’s Spider-Man franchise, Brand New Day picks up after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, following Peter Parker as he begins a new chapter with the world’s memory of him erased.

“Crime-fighting in a New York that no longer knows his name, he’s devoted himself entirely to protecting his city as a full-time Spider-Man. But as the demands on him intensify, the pressure sparks a surprising physical evolution that threatens his existence, even as a strange new pattern of crimes gives rise to one of the most powerful threats he has ever faced,” the film’s logline reads.

A Historic Debut

In the lead-up to the release of Brand New Day, it was clear that the film was another Marvel blockbuster.

On Friday, however, the film surpassed even the most optimistic expectations, grossing $168 million.

That figure easily surpassed Avengers: Endgame‘s $157.4 million opening day to deliver the biggest opening day in box office history.

Suddenly, it looked like history could be in play.

Over the past couple of days, fans have watched with bated breath to see if Spider-Man could stick the landing and surpass Avengers: Endgame for the biggest opening weekend ever.

Now, we have our answer.

‘Brand New Day’ Falls Just Short of ‘Endgame’

As things currently stand, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to finish the weekend with $355 million at the domestic box office.

That would leave the film just $2 million shy of Avengers: Endgame‘s historic $357 million opening weekend.

Additionally, Marvel now holds the four biggest domestic opening weekends of all time. Spider-Man: No Way Home ($260 million) and Avengers: Infinity War ($257.7 million) rounding out the list.

“This is a truly phenomenal opening, and we are grateful to audiences everywhere for coming out and experiencing our film the way it was meant to be seen,” said Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, who produced the movie. “This debut reflects the enduring power of Marvel’s characters, and the connection they continue to have with fans around the world. And, as audiences saw, it sets up exciting things to come.”

While nobody knows how high Brand New Day‘s box office total will climb, the film may finally put the idea of “superhero fatigue” to rest.

With Avengers: Doomsday still set to arrive later this year, 2026 is shaping up to be a historic return to form for Marvel Studios.
