The initial reviews for Spider-Man: Brand New Day are in, and it looks as though Marvel Studios has a true gem on its hands.
The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film is already on track to be a gargantuan commercial hit, but box office success is not always indicative of quality or artistic merit. It doesn’t look as though this is the case for Brand New Day, however, as the early critical response has been quite positive.

The newest Spidey film debuted to an impressive 93% on Rotten Tomatoes when the review embargo was lifted on Tuesday morning. That tied it with 2004’s Spider-Man 2 and 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home for the highest-rated live-action film in the broader franchise’s history.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Receives Strong Reviews
That number has dropped to 91% as of press time, but that still indicates overwhelmingly positive reviews.
Whereas No Way Home was overtly a crowd-pleaser with some heavier character moments throughout, early reviews indicate that Brand New Day is a much more intimate, character-driven story unafraid to delve into the titular webslinger’s psyche.
Critics have praised Tom Holland in what is his seventh overall turn as Peter Parker, with some positing that this is his best performance as the character yet. Series newcomer Sadie Sink has also earned acclaim for her portrayal of her as-of-yet unrevealed character.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s Rotten Tomatoes percentage will fluctuate as more reviews are submitted, but this is a promising start. Both of Marvel’s 2025 summer releases — Thunderbolts* and Fantastic Four: First Steps — settled in the high-80 percent range, and that looks to be the area toward which Brand New Day is trending.

For a movie with such palpable fanfare, we still don’t know all that much about Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
We know that Holland will return as Spider-Man alongside Zendaya and Jacob Batalon as MJ and Ned Leeds, respectively. We also know that Mark Ruffalo will make his MCU return as Bruce Banner/The Hulk.

Jon Bernthal will appear as Frank Castle/The Punisher, and Sink is playing a mystery character. That’s really all we know.
Several disparate villains will appear, though we’re not sure who Spidey’s primary foe is. The film’s logline suggests that Spider-Man will undergo a “surprising physical evolution” as he goes up against “one of the most powerful threats he has ever faced.”

The troubling dynamics within Peter’s friend group will also carry over from No Way Home and undoubtedly be addressed. Holistically speaking, Marvel has done an admirable job of concealing most of the film’s major plot points.
The strategy has demonstrably worked, as Brand New Day is trending toward a monstrous opening weekend. Some estimates have penciled the film in for an astonishing $800 million global debut.

If fans take to the film as kindly as critics, it could have some serious box-office legs. Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31.
