Marvel Studios is in the midst of a well-earned victory lap today following Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s record-breaking $360 million domestic debut.
Now the owner of the biggest opening weekend in North American box office history, Brand New Day is well on its way to a historic theatrical run.

The fourth installment in the MCU’s Spider-Man franchise, Brand New Day picks up after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, following Peter Parker as he begins a new chapter with the world’s memory of him erased.

“Crime-fighting in a New York that no longer knows his name, he’s also devoted himself entirely to protecting his city as a full-time Spider-Man. But as the demands on him intensify, the pressure sparks a surprising physical evolution that threatens his existence, even as a strange new pattern of crimes gives rise to one of the most powerful threats he has ever faced,” the film’s logline reads.
‘Brand New Day’ Has Been Blocked From IMAX
Perhaps the most impressive part of Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s historic debut is that the film did not have access to IMAX screens in most markets.

IMAX instead dedicated those premium auditoriums to The Odyssey, which, of course, Nolan filmed using IMAX cameras.

Beginning on August 6, however, that will change.
What Happens Now?
The Odyssey will lose its exclusive hold on IMAX screens, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day will finally expand into the premium format.

While access to IMAX will undoubtedly propel Brand New Day‘s box office total even higher, IMAX will devote the majority of its screenings to The Odyssey.
To date, Brand New Day has grossed $23 million from IMAX screens in China, Japan, and South Korea, where Universal has not yet released The Odyssey.

Meanwhile, The Odyssey has generated $221 million from IMAX screenings worldwide.
“Spider-Man has been among the most bankable superheroes at the global box office for over two decades, with the franchise delivering $365 million in IMAX receipts to date, and Brand New Day is taking that legacy to new heights with its record-breaking opening weekend,” said IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond.

“We believe more Spidey fans around the world will want to experience his latest adventure in IMAX, and we hope to be a major driver of both new and repeat viewing for the latest hit in this incredible year for moviegoing.”
