We’re less than two weeks away from the Spider-Man: Brand New Day premiere, and anticipation for the film is at an all-time high. Naturally, everyone invested in the MCU has been scouring every pixel of the images and official trailers so far released, looking for Easter eggs and plot cues. A lucky few have already seen preview footage, and as expected, the initial reception is overwhelmingly positive. For those wondering if their favorite song is part of the soundtrack, it’s now confirmed that there’s at least one needle drop that will set the tone for the entire film.
The MCU has repeatedly used needle drops to great effect, often to shift or escalate the narrative’s pacing. Remember in Thor: Ragnarok when Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” highlighted Thor’s reawakening? Or the AC/DC track “Back in Black” playing while Tony Stark sips his drink in the first Iron Man? How about that Black Sabbath song that dropped at the end of that film? Guardians of the Galaxy also had so many needle drops that fans created “mixtapes” for the trilogy. It looks like Spider-Man: Brand New Day is about to add another iconic song to the MCU’s greatest hits.
Speaking to MovieWeb‘s Joe Deckelmeier, director Destin Daniel Cretton confirmed that TV on the Radio’s “Wolf Like Me” will play early in the first act of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Those familiar with the song will immediately understand how that song fits into the sequel’s theme of rebirth. “Wolf Like Me” is about a barely contained primal passion that needs to be unleashed — it’s about giving in to your basic instincts. “Wolf Like Me” is confirmed to play within the first 30 minutes of the film, during a montage scene. That’s a lot to unpack because the trailers already hinted that Peter Parker has developed new powers he could hardly contain, and he would lose control of these later in the film. It’s still unclear whether the song will highlight that moment of transformation, or if it will be played early on during an innocuous montage, as foreshadowing. Cretton said they singled out that song among many because it meant a lot to him:
“We tried a lot of different songs, not just for what the song is about, but also just for something that creates the right vibe for that sequence. I’m a big fan of TV on the Radio. I saw them play at Madison Square Garden. It was one of my favorite New York experiences when I visited, so that song has always been special to me. And when we plopped it into that montage, it just felt, and not only felt right for the montage, it felt right for setting the tone of what this movie is going to be.”
Tom Holland recently hinted at a major plot twist at the very end of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and that title describes Peter’s “brand new day” at the very end of the film. Holland said it happens in the last frame of the movie, which should keep the audience glued to their seats waiting for the post-credits scene. Fans are now going wild with theories, from Peter finally getting the symbiote Spider-Man suit to Venom arriving in the MCU. Is Miles Morales finally making his live-action cameo in the ending?
