As promised the new Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailer is here with a whole new multiversal makeover. The trailer gives us a glimpse at not just a few Spideys, but a whole universe full of them.
The film sees Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) cross the Multiverse to reunite and join forces with Gwen Stacey (Hailee Steinfeld), and Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson), while meeting new characters like Miguel O’Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), Hobie Brown, aka Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya), and Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman (Issa Rae).
With all these Spideys, all this great power and responsibility, the question is, who would dare go up against this team of Spider-People? One of the film’s directors told Total Film that The Spot (voiced by Jason Schwartzman) will be the movie’s main antagonist. “The Spot is an interesting villain because he seems like a joke, but when you really look at his powers, there’s incredible potential. His ability to open portals across dimensions sets him up perfectly for the Spider-Verse.” says Kemp Powers – one of the film’s trio of directors. “He’s the villain of the next two films… and let’s just say that the Spot and Miles are connected in surprising ways.”
According to Powers the official synopsis of the film describes it as rift between the various Spider-People, “After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man [Miles Morales] is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.”
The trailer gives us a very emotional look at Miles and his mother, as well as an intense look at the Spider-Verse and what it has in store. Which tells us that we are in store for a few different themes throughout the film than with the first one. As well as a few more different animation styles, and as expected, some stunning visuals.
While Shameik Moore’s Miles Morales is still the main protagonist, this film will dive deeper into “the unique dilemma of being Gwen Stacy.” According to Powers “She’s a vigilante seen as responsible for the death of her world’s Peter Parker.” If that wasnt bad enough, “The cop in charge of tracking her down is her father.”
The film is directed by Kemp Powers, along with Joaquim Dos Santos and Justin K. Thompson.
The third movie, announced in 2021 during CCXP, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is slated for release in 2024. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be released exclusively in theaters on June 2023.
