Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: Animation, Threquel and Box Office

In the second film of the Oscar winning Spider-Verse saga “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse“, we see Miles Morales voiced by Shameik Moore return for the next chapter which takes him on an epic adventure that will transport Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man across the Multiverse to join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered.

Across the Spider-Verse which is an absolute masterpiece of art and storytelling contains one of the best and longest animated sequences in film history. Co-director Joaquim Dos Santos spoke about the entertaining and action packed sequence saying it took four years to animate that particular scene. “If you think about the Guggenheim sequence, that was the first thing that we storyboarded, that was the last thing that locked animation in the film.” He went on to say “So that was the entire four years that sequence was worked on.”

The scene shows Miles Morales being chased through a secret Spider-Man headquarters by a massive number of Spider-Man variants from different universes. “If you were to line up the hours worked on this film in a straight line, it’s like 792 hours straight, if it was one person who was doing it straight ahead. So the fact that all these things are happening in tandem, like side by side, that’s how these films get made. And it is, I’m telling you, thousands of people, it’s insane.” From realistic cartoon style to a Lego sequence, (which was animated by a 14 year old btw) to Japanese Manga, the amount of animation styles explored in this film is incredible.

After it’s release on June 2nd 2023, the sequel to 2018’s Into The Spider-Verse,  “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has been swinging to box office sucess domestically and internationally. The film is now the second-biggest opening of 2023 so far. Earning more than $208.5 million overseas, China ($17.3 million), Mexico ($11.6 million) and the United Kingdom ($11.5 million). The film’s budget was $100 million. “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” went on to earn a total of over $384 million. Outperforming Into The Spider-Verse.

The music for Across The Spider-Verse, just like it’s first film did not disappoint. Composer Daniel Pemberton has made something really special that literally transcends universes with the score for this film. “You’re making a score that jumps around different worlds and characters, and everyone has got to have a theme and melody and sound, and yet, they’ve all got to interact with each other.” Says Pemberton. Each character and universe had their own unique themes and yet they all melded together seamlessly. For example, Miles Morales’ (Shameik Moore) sound is rooted in hip-hop, whereas Gwen Stacy (Hailey Steinfeld) was given a “‘90s, indie-synth, pop band sound”,  Pavitr Prabhakar (Karan Soni) a.k.a. Spider-Man India was heavily influenced by Indian instruments, Pemberton called it “Insanely ahead of its time and was this futuristic Indian record.” and of course Hobie Brown (Daniel Kaluuya), a.k.a. Spider-Punk. He was given “guitars, heavy drums and distorted bass. It’s punk.”You can listen to the score here.

However Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is only half of the story. The movie ends with on a massive cliffhanger, one the size of which Marvel has not seen since “Avengers: Infinity War”. The next film, 2024’s “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” will take place directly after the events of the second film, Read More

Producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have promised that more new Spider-people will be coming in the next film. Beyond The Spider-Verse will release on March 29th 2024. It is confirmed to be the end of Miles Morales’ story, “That’s it for us. We’re so tired!,” says Chris Miller.

Across The Spider-Verse is a true cinematic masterpiece that should be experienced by everyone. Now playing in Theatres and releasing on demand soon.
